Adobe Lightroom for windows

Previously this has only been available on the MAc but today Adobe has gone public with the first Windows version. You have to register but it is currently free.

Project: Lightroom™ is Adobe’s effort to engage the professional photography community in a new way, giving you the opportunity to kick the tires and shape the feature set of a new tool being created just for you. Ultimately, we want Lightroom to be truly built from the ground up by photographers, for photographers, helping solve your unique workflow challenges

Re: Adobe Lightroom for windows

I'd put on SP2 now if I was you - along with all the most recent updates it should be a lot more stable.

It is true that when MS release a service pack it's best to wait a few months for them to fix all their *grandma edit*'s

As for the hack to get round XP SP2 only - nowt on the net that I can find so I'll try and crack the MSI installer itself.

Re: Adobe Lightroom for windows

ok, adobe have just made an enemy for life!

The reason why it won't run on 2K or XP SP1 is... wait for it...

because of some security updates to the os? No
because of some necessary hardware or software support not available in other older OS's? No
because the installer programmer was too stupid to work out how to allow all os's? Sadly not.

No, it's something much more prosaic! The damn XP theme system - the whole reason I wouldn't go near that abominable pile of dog poo in the first place - the thing that brings you the teletubbie desktop! Bloody themes.

As a programmer I can think of many reasons to restrict the OS code runs on but the last thing you should ever do is restrict users based on the bloody user interface - that is the height of stupidity.

Obviously adobe feels form is more important than functionality...

Sorry, rant over

Re: Adobe Lightroom for windows

I don't think you're missing much OP. According to comments on the Pixmantec forum, the Win beta is best regarded as a 'preview' and is at a much earlier stage than most betas. There are several issues including that it's very slow and resource hungry (min 768MB with 1GB recommended) and also the colours may not be right. From what I've read and seen, it makes RSP look really great.

This comes from Michael Tapes, admin of the Pixmantec forum and now linked to Adobe...

Also no real work should be done in LR. The future conversions may look different, and the settings may not be transferable. Remember this is a "pre" beta.
So it's OK to play and comment, but don't rely on it because the database of settings may disappear when it expires in January!

Re: Adobe Lightroom for windows

I've seen something about having to save a PSD with a 'maximum accessibility' option selected in order for LR to read it, but I don't use Photoshop so can't confirm. I believe there are also issues with some compressed TIFFs.

You have to wonder why they bothered releasing it at this stage - it seems to be very much 'work-in-progress', and what most people really wanted was something they could switch to from RSP. This obviously isn't it.
