Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

Just found out about this and thought I would put a post but you beat me to it.
As a user of DXO for over 10 years it's a bit worrying, I will have to look at on one and affinity, in extremis I suppose it may have to be PSCC.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

I've made sure that I have the latest updates in place for DXO Photolab and Viewpoint. Affinity has had some good reviews/comments from users, and I took advantage of the offer from the Photography Show to download it for half price. Alas, that offer ended I think a few days ago - unless they've extended it.

I use DXO for raw files, although Capture One is supposedly very good; but as most of my work is film based, PhotoShop CS2 meets my needs.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

You may also consider Macphun and Coral's Paintshop Pro as other alternatives. While I was happy that many alternatives to Adobe were emerging to keep Adobe prices down, I did think that there were too many so economic pressure were bound to take a toll. While I have briefly evaluated DXO, ON1, Macphun and paintshop Pro (early versions in some cases) none of them could do all the things I use in Adobe LR/P cc.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

This is indeed bad news, like Charles I have been using DXO for some years and with the launching of DXOLAB incorporating NIX I hardly use my Adobe CS6 now at all. DXO LAB does it better. I have redone a lot of images which were processed in Lightroom and CS6 and the improvements are enormous and I thought the images could not be improved upon. The last I heard from them they were bringing out a new version mid 2018 with improvements in the NIX section.
Image processing programs are like anything else it's all in what one is used to working with and one does not want. the hassle of learning a new program. But long live DXO LAB.
Colin.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

I have just tried the free trial of affinity, deeply disappointing, I tried to download last weekends RAW files of the event as I usually do in DXO after 26 mins it still had not done it and the only way to stop it was to crash the computer!
I then tried to do one image (30Mpx 165Mb standard from my 5DMk4) 3mins to open it, every adjustment was excruciatingly slow and the end result was very poor.
I decided to clean the HD after that and found there were 1163 temporary files on it ( I do that after every use and at the start there were only 2 on it) I have removed the trial download and will not be using it again.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

That is odd Charles. Affinity has been getting a lot of praise on another site I'm a member of. A lot of people have switched to it.

I did not think that you can use Affinity to import images. This is confirmed by this reply to the question in their support forum:

Welcome to Affinity Forums

Affinity Photo is not a DAM (digital assets management) software like Lightroom or Aperture. It doesn't manage libraries like those programs. Affinity is a RAW converter/developer and photo editor. You have to import the images from your camera to a folder then open them in Affinity Photo (menu File ▸ Open). You can have several documents/images open but you can only work on one at once.

We will launch our own DAM solution later.

You can batch process though. I've just batch processed 263 RAW files (about 12 GB worth) using Affinity into web jpgs and it took 15 minutes which I think is reasonable. Having said that, I would not use batch process and this is the first time I've ever done it in any software.

A single RAw file took a little longer to open than in PS, but the adjustments were immediate.

So I'd say that maybe you were trying to do something that Affinity ca't do yet (import) and the time for processing the single image might be computer related

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

Not sure Graham, I don't think it is computer related as I frequently down load 60+ images to DXO at once and they are loaded in 3 or 4 mins and the processing of each image is virtually instant, with export being about 15 seconds. I also have no problems with Elements loading or processing. My processor is an i5 and I have 32 G of RAM.
Maybe it is because I still use Windows 7 ?

I'm on Win 7 too Charles. I wonder if it is worth a message to their support? I only say this as I've seen so many positive things written about Affinity - they can't all be wrong!

I am waiting on a reply from Affinity, but in the meantime looked into the problem with DXO and it appears they had some outstanding debts but have said it will not affect DXO Lab so here's hoping.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

I had a quick look at the Affinity site and played a couple of you tube tutorials and I was not impressed, it all seemed rather complicated and adjustments done by layers, DXOLAB was much quicker and simpler for doing the same thing. Although I was impressed by the cut out selection tool. I think On one {If that is the correct title might be a better bet].
Even if DXO goes out of business it does not mean you will lose your program from the computer just there will be no more updates. We will just have to wait and see what happens

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

Just got a reply from Affinity,
They do not recommend downloading full res RAW files as that is how they display them, whereas most other programs use the "embedded j peg" files to work on.
They say they are working on the issue and it will get better in time.
Says it all really.
You are right Collin, the DXO program will still work, just no updates, but lots of us are using "old" copies of software as they do what we want.
To be on the safe side and keep the RAW converter up to date, I have just purchased Elements 18 and yesterday ran the same images through it as the Affinity, no problems ,fast as DXO and the updates to it are good.
So worst case if I upgrade my camera (not likely in the short time) would be opening the RAWS in elements ,saving as Tiff and then adjusting in DXO.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

Charles, I used to have Elements can't remember which one and I hated it , probably just me so I did away with it.
You do things slightly different to me regarding downloads. If have a new collection of pictures I create a new folder name it usually something like what it is and the date and store it on my two external HD's. To look at the images to see what they are like I open the folder in a free program called " Faststone" and run a slide show. To process I then open the folder in DXOLAB and pick the good ones I have seen in "Faststone" and carry on from there, it is a quick way of getting rid of the duds.
I can then do a couple of final tweeks in CS6. if necessary, I pick the ones I want convert to TIFF 16 bit and put in a sub folder called "Converted" I am using Win 10.
Colin.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

Basically the same Collin, just minus the "faststone" bit, I open in DXO and as I work through them I just click "delete from disc" if I don't like them.
The new Elements 18 is very similar to DXO even to having "de haze" and is greatly updated from my old 13 version.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

If any of these non-Adobe editors perform as well as Adobe their fate may be similar to Rawshooter. Perhaps some of you remember many of us were using this around 2007 including many professionals. It worked very well but Adobe were developing Lightroom so bought Rawshooter and employed the software designers in their LR team.

One of the things some may like about DX0 Raw is that it automatically sets start values. I did not like this myself and much prefer the LR situation where all settings are neutral so it is entirely up to me. I found that while DX0 did automatically adjust well for some images, about half were very poor and need a lot of adjustment. It may have been possible to reset but I did not get that far. I believe the main reason why Raw converters are seen by some to perform very differently is mainly down to the rendering profile and I suspect few even set this and just leave it on default. In LR, it used to be the bottom panel so few got to it. Adobe seem to have recognised this, so the profile has now been included at the top of the Basic panel. I use a bespoke profile for each of my cameras so get a more accurate rendering than accepting the various defaults.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

Dave, I remember Rawshooter well I only ever used JPEG until Rawshooter was given away free and then I started to use only RAW. I them upgraded to the better version and then Adobe bought it over and gave away a free Lightroom 1 to any Rawshooter owner of the better version. It was good value as Lightroom was I think £200 and we got it free.
I can't agree with you about the DXO start images being poor I find them all to be of acceptable quality but certainly can be improved like anything else with adjustment.
DXOLAB is a quality product, I have no idea why they are in this position, perhaps their sales were not big enough. However I hope someone will take them over and either keep it or combine with another product time will tell.
Colin.

Re: DxO Files for Bankrupcy in France

It is not always to do with the product. Many years ago I used an Image editing product on an Acorn RiscPC. At the time it moved from V2 to V3, it was comparable in features and performance to Photoshop which was then also at V3. Unfortunately, the owner of the software company I was using was subject to a credit card fraud and his business never really recovered. It is not certain that DX0 will disappear but DX0 Mark may be split off.
