ICI develops exciting new 3D inkjet imaging technology

In an exciting and revolutionary new development, ICI Imagedata has launched a unique imaging system- Pictaflex- that enables 3D items to be decorated with a full colour design or photographic image.

Most of us take for granted the products that we see and use everyday without giving any thought as to how they are produced, but designers and manufacturers are continually searching for innovative new techniques to apply.

Mostly, due to the type of product or perhaps the numbers required, they have been limited in what they can achieve by the technologies available to them.

Pictaflex changes all this. Now companies can decorate a huge range of different products with an infinite number of designs or finishes- whether for a limited edition or mass production.

Imagine sending your TV or computer manufacturer a photograph of your wallpaper and having your new TV or computer delivered with the casing designed to blend into its surroundings perfectly. Or your fridge door permanently decorated with your child's precious painting.

Far fetched perhaps- and not to everyone's taste- but perfectly possible with Pictaflex.

The Pictaflex process transfers any design or photographic quality image by dye diffusion. A specially coated recyclable polyester film is printed using aqueous inkjet technology. The ink is then fused into the surface of the object by application of heat and pressure to produce a durable long- lasting finish.

Unlike other comparable decorative techniques, Pictaflex can reproduce any digital image on highly complex 3D shapes with excellent image quality- even around 90 degrees angles.

Endless applications

The applications for Pictaflex technology are numerous. To name just a few:

- Interior and exterior trim components for cars, boats, planes and trains
- Electric products
- Ceramics and glass
- Sporting goods
- Fashion items, such as clothing, footwear, eye wear or jewellery
- Architectural items, such as floor tiles, light fittings and door handles
- Household appliances, such as kettles, toasters or microwaves
- Telephones- fixed, cordless or mobile
