UK recall for Canon EOS-1D Mark III - Autofocus (AF) problems due to AF Mirrors

Canon have released following :-

Why do I experience inconsistent Auto Focus (AF) behaviour with my EOS-1D Mark III?

Applicable models
EOS-1D Mark III,

EOS-1D Mark III

Phenomenon:
The focus or AF tracking is inconsistent when using the Artificial Intelligent (AI) servo continuous shooting mode under high temperatures in particular.

Cause:
In the digital SLR camera, EOS-1D Mark III that was launched in May this year, Canon has found that some cameras have an adjustment problem with the mirror for AF. The adjustment problem means for the affected products that the focus is not stable or that the Auto Focus tracking is not right when using the AI servo continuous shooting under high temperatures in particular.

Affected products:
The products that could have this problem can be identified as explained below. If the serial number on the bottom of the camera is between 501001 and 546561, it could contain one of the AF mirrors with the adjustment problem.

Support:
For customers who have affected products and are experiencing these problems, we are making preparations to offer free of charge repairs planned to start from late November. We will announce additional details about the repair process on our Web site as soon as they become available.

It seems Canon will not refund or replace camera if it has this fault, but only repair it. Can imagine some Togs won't be happy with that

I certainly would not be happy with just a repair.

Re: UK recall for Canon EOS-1D Mark III - Autofocus (AF) problems due to AF Mirrors

Pleased to report that Canon replaced my 40D when I reported problems in the first few days of ownership. It suddenly decided only to work first in Live View (cleared by battery removal) and then later the mirror seem to freeze up and it only worked in the idiot modes. Both were cleared by battery removal then completely clearing all settings and going back to original setting. Surprisingly it must have known it was going back as it behaved its self for the three weeks I was waiting for the replacement.

Just an update, whilst this seems to have solved some problems Rob Galbraith who first really highlighted this problem and has worked with Canon on the solution says they still are not out of the woods yet.

Re: UK recall for Canon EOS-1D Mark III - Autofocus (AF) problems due to AF Mirrors

I've been following this with interest. I was going to purchase a 1DMKIII (even though I said I wouldn't)..........but I think I will wait until things settled down a little.

Canon do appear to be in a little bit of a mess with the MKIII at the moment

I see one guy who had one of his 1DMKIII's back from repair had a note saying that the warranty had been increased by one full year.
