Beca Shoot 6 series 3

In for a penny - in for a pound! Same lighting set up as the last set, but with a costume change.

I've taken on board Fiona's comments and have had a look at the un-posted images I've got of Becca and on some of the shots the dark lines under her eys are visible, but on others they are not. This does lead me to think that it is a combination of her dark skin tone along with the angle of the shot and the way the light is catching her. The apparent blotchyness is the transition from shadow to highlight as I suspected. All of the (minimal) processing was done in Lightroom, so I've done a bit of work on these in PS to reduce these effects and the lines under the eyes.

Here goes:

Graham, A definite improvement on the previous post, skin tones are now smooth and natural looking, and I don't see any lines under the eyes. The red lighting would not be to my preference but that is just a personal opinion. If this is the effect you wanted it has been successful. No. 1 would be my favourite

Re: Beca Shoot 6 series 3

totally agree much better, i like #1 a lot., i so want to like the last one as well but its suffering from what a lor of poeple do and thats forget about the rest of hte model when u have lit her face as her feet are disappearing into the background BUT that is a minor and easily sorted niggle and to my eye this is by far and away the best set of portraits you have posted.

Re: Beca Shoot 6 series 3

Thank you both

Colin - the idea for this shoot was to go for a punky / funky look hence the red and blue lighting. As with every picture we collectively produce some will please and some won't. As always I appreciate your input

Fi - further to my first post, I've now had a good look at the original files and can add that the blotchy effect is not there at all, so most likely to do with the re-sizing, but as I said before i use the same action for all of my web stuff, and not every one shows it so I guess it is sensitive to the individual picture. Something to watch in future. The marks under the eyes are more intriguing. They don't show on every picture, and when they do a really close look makes me think that under the eyes could be make up that stands out or fades depending on the light. Her lower lid also protrudes a bit so can, in certain light, add a shadow to the make up. The lines just could be her dark skin tone again reacting to the camera and lighting angle.

could be make up and this is where its invaluable to have a good make up artist who understands the lights
but a big improvement Graham which is great to be able to say

Re: Beca Shoot 6 series 3

Just occurred to me Fi. In the most recent shoots with Becca I've used a different processing method than with my earlier studio work with all models. Previously I've exported 16bit tiff from LR to a folder then did the final bits and resizing for the web in PS. Trying to streamline my workflow because of the backlog that built up, these recent shoots (that are the ones that you have criticized the facial tones and eye rings etc) were processed entirely in LR and then exported as jpgs directly. It seems that doing this has been detrimental as the flaws and artefacts were never an issue in the past.

Re: Beca Shoot 6 series 3

could well have something to do with it Graham... but i export from light room in Tiff and finish off in PS and Alan does it the way you have done the latest. we are always comparing ours and there doesn't seem to be a discernible difference. did you export previously in tiff or jpg though that may be an issue . don't know for sure though
it could just be that you are getting better at the processing and understanding what your colour blindness is confusing?

That is interesting, but does Alan go down to Pixalo sizes in jpg?

My old workflow was to do some work in LR export in 16 bit tiff, do some PS work to finish off and convert to 8 bit tiff for storage, then go to jpg from there, so a 3 stage process. As I was getting so far behind with my processing I had to try to find a quicker method to catch up, so the last few shoots were processed completely in LR and exported in jpg at Pixalo sizes. I'm not completely comfortable only processing in LR as it lacks the subtlety that you can get with PS, but it sure did speed things up. The artifacts were not showing in every shot though

I'll keep at it
