Eric Marienthal

Any Jazz fans here?

Eric Marienthal is the best Alto Sax player I've seen - and I've seen a lot. Usually to be found playing with Gordon Goodwin in the Big Phat Band. Last night Eric came across the pond to play at the Wigan International Jazz Festival with Wigan Youth Jazz orchestra. Once again this year I'm lucky enough to be the official photographer for the event.

Fuji X-T1 and 90mm F/2

Typically I'm shooting at -2ev anywhere between ISO1600 and 3200 (2000 for these 3) just to get enough light to shoot at F/2 - tricky stuff!

Re: Eric Marienthal

THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR DOC. I STARTED PLAYING DRUMS WHEN I WAS TEN, I PLAYED DRUMS IN BANDS IN THE 1960'S, BUT EVERYTIME WE HAD A SAX PLAYER PLAYING WITH US, I JUST LOVED THE SOUND, AS I THINK IT IS THE ONLY INSTRUMENT THAT IS ANYWHERE TO THE HUMAN VOICE.

I HAD LESSONS FOR TWO YEARS, REALLY ENJOYED PLAYING THE SAX, TRIED AN ALTO, BUT PREFFERED THE TENOR SAX , TRIED A SOPRANO SAX, BUT FOUND IT TO TIGHT, THE TENOR IS A REALLY GREAT INSTUMENT TO PLAY, HAD TO STOP PLAYING AFTER MY ACCIDENT.

STILL PLAY DRUMS ONE HANDED, HAVE TAUGHT MY GRANDDAUGHTER TO PLAY.
ALSO HAVE A LEFT HANDED BANJO, WHICH I GET A FEW TUNES OUT OF, WITHOUT HOLDING CHORDS.

WHEN MUSIC AND PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT IS IN THE BLOOD, NOTHING WILL STOP YOU PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT OF SOME SORT, PLAYED BASS GUITAR FOR A WHILE AS WELL.

DO YOU STILL PLAY DOC ?

Re: Eric Marienthal

Don't play anymore Woody - 76 now!!!

Started in school brass band aged 11 (Tenor Horn), than Alto and Tenor sax at 15, formed dance band and jazz band after leaving school - good times.

All ended with marriage/mortgage/daughter!!!!
