Gangster

A friend has been growing his Movember, so another friend suggested we shoot him for our weekly camera group meeting (we've broken away from our local club & set up on our own to just enjoy taking photographs & meeting at the pub ).
It was suggested that he wore a suit and looked like a gangster & rather agressive, completely different to his actual personality and in the end he really took to it
Between us we have access to a couple of sets of lights, but for this used one in my garden with a beauty dish attached.

Re: Gangster

Interesting photograph and you have seceded in capturing what you set out to do. Well done.
Your remark about breaking away from your local camera is also interesting and I am wondering the reason why. My wife and I quit the camera club circuit about three years ago. This was partly due to health reasons at the time but mainly due to the fun and enjoyment seemed to have gone out and it was all competitive and jealously. And a clique of judges who just picked each others pictures and better quality photos were being ignored. They thought they were very important but most just laughed at them behind backs. It meant the break up of a couple of clubs and a new group setting up. I did not go back as it means a 40 mile return journey to Belfast to take part and I could not be bothered as well as the expense. I get more fun here at Pixalo. I would be interested in your comments.

Colin.

Re: Gangster

Our local club is run by a committee that have been there for years, they don't want to change. The meetings are held to a really strict formula which has to be adhered to, even if they go out anywhere, meeting has to be started and finished & they didn't really go out together & if they did, you didn't show anyone else what you were shooting or help anyone out, it was all very secret.
Judging was done by the members on a show of hands & you were allowed to initially vote for only 3 images in an evening, but this was changed to as many as you liked. Judging of opens, well, that was another matter, some of the judges clearly had no idea, one had never seen lens flare before from someone shooting into the sun, thought it was a camera fault.
What finally tipped me over the edge was at one competition one of the elderly ladies entered a photo she'd pinched off the internet and printed. I was suspicious on the evening when it won!!! & this was a badly pixelated print, so I went home and googled the subject and low and behold up it came. So I phoned the chairman and it was disqualified. The only thing said was that it was ok to print it, but not to enter it!!! Nothing said about taking images that are not your own.
So a group of 6 of us are now on our own, we have a facebook page and we try to meet once a week, either to shoot or meet at one of our houses or the pub to share images and also do processing or shooting tutorials for each other. It's fun & as you say the enjoyment appeared to have gone from the main camera club.

Re: Gangster

Nice shot Sarah It has got atmosphere and presence.

I joined my club about six months ago. I had a choice of three within 10 miles. It is also run by a Committee - but we meet twice a week, go out in the evenings in the Summer and meet throughout the year too. Competitions are judged by independent judges, and although there can be some decisions that are not universally approved of, in the main it works well enough. We also enter inter club competitions. So far the competitions have been with an open theme so trying to compare a macro with a great portrait is difficult (just like Photo of the Week) Some members are not very active but this is to be expected in any club or organisation.

There are some things that could be improved especially in the studio, but in general things work out well.

Re: Gangster

This works really well Sarah ... The trianglular shape created and the tension it invokes, the lighting, pose and comp are all very complementary. It's not busy at all, but has just enough happening (in the bg and subject) to grab the viewer's interest and immediately grasp the potential threat posed. Well done

Re: Gangster

Whipspeed,
Your post sounds familiar, the club I was in was founded over 100 years ago. It has I have been told it is now down to about six active members and a few who don't take any part except to appear now and again. Having said that there are still a few good clubs about it is just a matter of finding one but I am now at an age where it is not worth the bother and I just do photography for my own fun.

Re: Gangster

I went down to the annual exhibition the other week and only 7 members had entered. We tried at the last AGM to give some ideas and they were pooh poohed, particularly my idea of an exhibition at our local theatre, that gets a huge footfall and is free, I'd researched it for them, got all the paperwork etc. 4 months later, they organised one, but it was the committees idea, they don't like anyone else having an idea for their club.
The chairman also said they had a problem getting new members, but then they put newcomers off, escpecially beginners, by telling them if they ask for advice that they don't have time during the meetings for that!

We do the same as you, we all just do it as a group to have fun.

As -Oy-, well setup My only thoughts would have been to add a Trilby/Fedora to give him a mean 40's look.

This shot is real fun. You certainly got the look from the model. Could easily be a still for a movie poster.
