Re: Which one?

Willow,
I would go for one as well, but it seems to have green colour cast, look at the sand, looks unnatural.

Re: Which one?

Hmm tricky, the firs has the most natural expression, but the shadows are not as harsh on the second. If using the second though I'd probably crop a bit off the top. Will do a mod to show if that is ok.

Re: Which one?

I think I would go for number two, but crop out at least the two shadow lines across the top of the image, probably more. The light doesnt look right on number one to me, maybe its a colour cast I'm not sure

Re: Which one?

Thanks for your feedback - #2 will definitely crop out shadows, should have spotted that
With #1 perhaps I'll start again with levels? Is there a filter I should use?

There is a shadows/highlight tool in PS, but I've always found that it does not work very well. If you shot in RAW the fill light tool in Lightroom is very effective and there are probably equivalents in other RAW converters.

You could try using levels and tweaking the middle slider. If I get time tomorrow I'll give that a try and post the result.

Re: Which one?

Sorry - I clean forgot about this

Here is stage 1. All I have done here is to move the gamma slider to a value of 1.52

And then I used the hated shadow/highlight tool. I took the shadow controls back to zero, and left the bottom section - colour sat, midtone and clip points alone and used (from memory) these apporoximate values of amount 40, Tonal width 30 and radius 20 for the highlight controls and got this:

Think the hate has dissipated somewhat now - was in the early versions of PS when it would give splendid haloes and weird chroma! Much better nowadays!

Re: Which one?

Here is my effort, a bit rough as working on low res, but have run through portrait pro to tweak a couple of bits and finished in cs5 with some work on the levels & a couple of blemishes. Bit OTT maybe, but tricky working with low res images as you can't zoom in to fine tune.

Elements is getting more features added as they bring out new editions, and often Adobe will add something special to it to trial before putting it into Photoshop, but I thought that it has had levels for a while at least.

Re: Which one?

I'm sure it has levels, which is the tool I used an dodge & burn, so you should be fine.
