Soldiers from the English Civil War

We has three guys visit the club recently who are members of a war re-enactment society. The club was very busy on the night and I took few pictures. I even resorted to bumping up the ISO and just used the modeling lights. This resulted in some of them being noisy and when this was reduced has softened the images a bit.

Other than them looking a bit too well groomed, their dress and kit was quite impressive.

As usual, I was not happy with the lighting and have converted them to mono and have also darkened the background in the mono ones. I'll post them up later.

Nice set.
Like 8 best. Bet it would look good in B&W and burned a bit. Great expression.

The back ground has some creasing but understand what you are saddled with in
regards to studio equipment.

Another nice set of images, I especially like the "war face".

Re: Soldiers from the English Civil War

It would have been better with fewer 'togs there! It was a manic session which is why I only took a few shots and around half were with available light as we only have 6 transmitters for the wireless triggers. That means using only the modeling lights!

BG is a Lastolite Dakota and would have been better if the lighting was different

Thanks for the comments

One of the reasons I was unhappy with the club scene long ago. In those days multiple triggers were not available and so we were only using modelling lights, or maybe an IR or even selenium trigger. Although the atmosphere was very friendly I never found that I could get the angle and lighting I wanted. Photographing amongst others in these circumstances was always a challenge that I could not master, and I felt a lot better in a private studio, with my own lighting and space.

As you say they look a little too clean for war mongers, but these guys modelled well and you've got some good shots (I think the gnashers look more deadly than the axe )

Some things don't change!

To be fair, this session was on a 'normal' club night when more people turn up. We usually have the studio nights on Thursday and get between 4 and 7 people there - much more manageable, and the people are more experienced using studio lighting which makes things easier. Even so, your comments still apply and in any 'group shoot' there are always compromises.

Part of our problem is the ancient kit that has few light modifiers and is so old that you can't get accessories that will fit the heads as the fitting is not a bayonet style, but friction type grips on either side of the head!
