Re: 6 Panes

As soon as I saw it I thought "Orton" and then clicked the big image. I particularly like the different shades of the wall which could quite easily have been blown out

Like it Steve

Re: 6 Panes

I think the comp's spot on but I'm not convinced by the treatment (but I'm the first to admit that I'm underwhelmed by filters!) - I might've been tempted to remove the half flower pot

Rumpled rather than ripped to bits!

Re: 6 Panes

im on the fance with the orton technique for this particular image, I think the walls and window at least need to be hard and sharper. i agree with Mark about the cut off pot, but otherwise its a nice mix of colours and textures. a pleasing image to look at.

Re: 6 Panes

Thanks folks.

I initially had the original in mind for printing but succumbed to the 'soft focus' Orton treatment after I cloned out a vent which was on the right hand side of the wall. I decided it was a little 'plain' as it was and I quite liked the Orton effect to exaggerate that 'postcard' feel.

I didn't even notice the half pot..........I was more drawn to the red flower and the leading steps.

I have mounted it now (busy at work today!.......) and it does look rather nice. We'll see what the judges say

Re: 6 Panes

Possibly even just a desat on the pot may be enough....it is quite a bit stronger in colour to the rest. I like the effect up against that plain creamy wall. The blue of the window contrasts nicely with the red of the flowers and the overall shot I think is very pleasing imo.
Nice work.

Re: 6 Panes

Putting aside whether I like the filtered style, what you have done has been done very well so good work Steve. I do actually quite like this effect and it would look good mounted for sure.

Can't say the half-pot over worried me really. It adds to the feel of 'there's more outside the frame' which can be effective in allowing the viewer's mind to expand the picture beyod its own borders.

Let us know what the judge thought of it. As a judge myself though I can add the comment: 'what do they know anyway?'

Cheers,
Rob

Re: 6 Panes

When I first looked, I thought "impressionistic effect", then I went to flickr and saw Orton. I think that you did a really good job with the effect here, as it does certainly give the image that slight early 20th century French effect.

The contrast between the diagonal steps and flowers and the window is a terrific use of the composition. And the colors are great as well. The half pot leads one to wonder what else it out of the frame, as Rob said.

All in all, I really like this. Let us know when you win the grand prize.

Everyone has their opinion Rob, thats the great thing about it all. I have to wait a few weeks until the first merit print competiton but this will definitely be entered.
