Re: 65mm marco 3X

Good detail in the eyes. Looks like you may of used quite a wide aperture. 3x is also getting to where I find it starts getting really tricky freehand, even with flash - holding it steady and focusing gets fun at 2x and then ramps up!

I normally shoot F11 with this lens, with the flash. As the mag moves up, getting the objects position correct for the look of more DOF is key.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

Hi Chris, thought about everything you've said as I've followed you all along. I might of had F/11 orF/16 here. I remember starting out at F/5.6 and -3 on the flash. Fighting burst of wind and then no wind taking shots between. It was backing up here, I turned up the flash to +2.3 on this one and feel it could have been lower. I enjoyed the hunt even tho you are looking for small things. The nice thing about haveing a one hundred mm is the ease of rest. Once you have past the first lesson. I did back off at 2X and captured the whole bug.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

You may well of done. If that is as small a bug as I think it is, then at 3x it's going to be hard to get. Shows the limited dof you get as you up the mag perfectly. Good lighting results from the setup, like the background being green.

Much of the fun is in the hunt. And don't talk to me about the wind, it was really playing up yesterday.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

A good first attempt with this extreme macro lens. It does look to be a very tiny bug perhaps look for something larger to shoot to help you get use to it using the lens and getting a handle on the best lighting set up

Re: 65mm marco 3X

You have it right for sure, altho I have seen you shoot smaller bugs, I need practice " " ".
I used to do much gardening around my yard, the best flowers come back every year and some spread. Looking at one as I pulled up getting out of my truck, I found my self looking for bugs and nice places to get down on the ground with good sun light. My very first picture was in straight sun and came out exposure wise. So yes, thanks so much for dropping by Pete, I enjoy your work and study it closely.

Hi Boofers, I have steadily built up the level of magnification, though always finding with a new lens that goes that extra mile that I go to extreme before winding my enthusiasm back in

Re: 65mm marco 3X

Heres a picture I started out at 2X and moved in at 4X and saw these little worm like bugs moving around. Real exciting, bright yellow flowers called a Coriopese I think.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

Yea, I was in direct sunlight, it cooked me but it works without a flash as you know. I was very happy that I saw them with just the turn of the mag..cool. If I can get settled and using my spade pod, a foot tall tripod. with the Velbon this time on a heavy ball it is just about the right working highth for me to sit down, one of my favorite positions.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

Well they are v.small. Good to get the right position

One thing - if that is a bright yellow flower - then one of three things is wrong - as it looks a bit dark yellow in the shot.

1) My monitor.
2) Your post processing of the shot.
3) And I think you said you shot in natural light, but if flash used then the power is wrong / lamps angled incorrectly. As the mag moves up you need more light and more angle down from the guns.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

I took a lot of shots with different F stops, but after listening to what you have explained before, I think I forgot to mention the trouble I was in. 4X and trying 5X with the flower so close at that Mag. I was lost like you are saying. It is dark from being right in the flower, the light drop off is new for me as you have mentioned. I also was trying to use my aperture view button with out pressing the button. Don't know if the 1D even has one. I never use this so I'll keep movin on cause it is a lot of fun, a real challenge.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

I don't think I could press the aperture preview button and focus with the lens at 4x and 5x. Yes - you are right the flower gets dark if you dive in, it's real fun looking through into that world though, I spent most of the first few months having to be in really close x4 x5 etc - it's part of the fun of the lens ,
I still get into that even having had it a few years now, the buzz is still there - along with the challenge. I have to back of on many though to 1 - 2 x to get the thing in the shot.

Re: 65mm marco 3X

Thanks Simpbow, now for summer. It will be hot, and real sunny, conditions I last only for short bursts because of the humidity. I have a close spot down a hill from my house were it is undisturbed, gotta be full of bugs.

I think it's fantastic but would be better if you had the right eye on more focus than the left one just because it's more visible. it's also much easier to point out what I would've done differently than actually doing it by myself
