Re: Alva Glen
I like this a lot Fi. The composition really works, and the silky water is a good contrast to the texture in the rocks.
After seeing your other shots (mono + colour) in the sharing forum, I wonder if the mono is loosing out on some detail. The colour version of the other one does show different areas on the rocks and plant life a little better than the mono. |

Re: Alva Glen
thanx Graham....... i will post the colour version later........ the reason behind doing this in mono was that is was soooo green! lol
had to climb down a near sheer drop anfter climbing over the "keep out" type fence thing.. was an absolutel scream trying to get back up! needless to say the only thing that didint get covered in muck was the camera........ but i wish these people who look after these places would learn that its just NO use putting a fence up if i want to take a pic! lol have another one taken from the top of the falls looking down...which was REALLY interesting! Re: Alva Glen
Super shot Fiona, I really like this
Fab composition, but lose the inner white border, + I wish the FG was in focus too. Lovely texture detail in the rocks, I like the blurred water, + you got a good tonal range here, with exposure spot on ... some of the water is burnt out, but that's not serious here, as it doesn't take up a lot of the frame. I might be temped to crop half an inch off the top to crop out the stray bits of bleached sky at both top corners. These are niggles ... lovely image PS: Re: the FG seeming OOF ... the rocks on bottom left look in focus, but the water on the RHS is blurred from the slow shutter speed, + I think this is what gives the impression of the FG not being within the DoF

Re: Alva Glen
Aghhhhhhh! You got a great comp here but all the water is burned! Sorry, but the water is the reason for taking the shot! No ND Grad needed - I don't have a single filter, other than UV and CP. Next time please try exposure compensation of between -1.0 to -2.0. Yes, the surroundings will be underexposed but at least the water won't be burned detailess!

Re: Alva Glen
we normally get in habit of taking few readings for lighting , example light reading off darkest area then lightess then go with in middle of range , also take a couple of shots each side of reading ..And with the water the same small f stop(large number) high f stop (small number) and play with shutter speed maybe from 1 sec up to 10 secs and thats just so when we process we can see all ranges and effects on water . Mainly as we are learning we experiment with settings .Will place couple in photo sharing just to show
difference. As hopefully maybe bit of help for some .But like everything comes back to experimenting. Did see your colour version which i prefer as i feel with waterfalls the colour surrounding (ferns and bushes) creates the magic of the place .(my opinion anyhow)

Re: Alva Glen
okies thanx......... right its ok saying that u dont need a ND filter. but no matter what i try either the water is burnt or the surroundings are too dark and thereby lose the detail..... im trying to get to a happy medium.
Chick..... i simply dont have time to do all that unfortunately........ when u have a ten yr old moaning constantly when u take too long to get ONE shot there is no way i can get time to take as many shots as that will require. saying that i did play with the shutter and aperture settings to a point.......and at that point it was time to go..... i could have quite happily stayed for longer but thats life...... oh and i didint have my tripod as it was impractical to get it down the climb ....ok would have got it down would probably not have got it back up again! lol Fi and i dont take any readings! EVER!.....i set the camera to what i think i need take the shot..... if i have time change a few more settings......... take a few more shots.then move on. |

[....ok would have got it down would probably not have got it back up again! lol
Fi lol can relate to that .....some of our waterfalls are a good climb, am seriously going to invest in tripod bag ,or different type tripod as , i cant be without mine. I have old strap i put through handle thing on tripod and then over shoulder and neck , then have camera and bag....We are lucky as we dont have to rush . Just a thought have you thought to get your son a camera that way he would have something to occupy himself with. I was lucky enough to have children that love nature and being out in the bush exploring, so i couldnt imagine what it would be like to have one that gets bored by nature. definately think the climb and walk into the falls are worth every step ,just to see the beauty with in the falls themselves. |

Re: Alva Glen
my son has had a digital camera for um 2 years now i think,. he got my little 2 mg Olympus...... and no amount of cajoling etc will get him to use it, and on the very odd occasion he does he takes a couple snaps and then it gets dumped into my bag.
he doesnt mind nature, but he finds it very boring on a long walk. plus the fact he is a lazy little toe rag and does not see the point in walking anywhere. when we go out the first thing he says is " oh mum not ANOTHER castle " lol my answer.......TOUGH. Fi |

Re: Alva Glen
Great Picture. The water is transient, the rocks more permanent. Your pic brought this out.
