Re: another abstract
Possibly but it depends what you want to achieve. I took a similar picture through the dome at Canary Wharf and did not think the picture had enough impact for a competition. I used a filter to effectively change the colours for a more dramatic set. Of course the picture moves away from the truth towards artistic interpretation and some will like it and some will not. But it is your choice. If you want a record shot then just slightly lighter would be fine. I would certainly have taken the picture, if I had been there.

Re: another abstract
I would definitely crop this Fi, the symmetrical look on this just makes it a bit.... boring <hides>
As an abstract we are not interested in what it really is, we are looking only at the interplay between lines, angles and curves. I have cropped and lightened slightly (a bit unsharp because of the compression as I have effectively enlarged a small part of your pic) to show you a different shot. Whilst both versions are valid abstract shots, I think the cropped version makes the viwer think a bit more about what it is and things. Just an idea anyway ![]() Cheers, Rob ![]()

Re: another abstract
mm yeah i see what you mean Rob, have given me something else to think about as always!... but i do like both shots! lol
to be perfectly honest at the moment i am trying to concern myeslf more with the settings of the camera ( bearing in mind i have never had smaller than f11 to play with lol) obviously i have an eye on composition but at the mo that is taking second place to learning the camera.... Fi |

Re: another abstract
With the pic as is, the crop works. If there was a spot of brightness in the inner region then there would be no need to crop. Good technique / camera.

Re: another abstract
Fiona I love your original just as it is. I don't think I'd like it as well were it lighter. The variations in blues caused by the clouds around the dome add a nice depth to the photo.

Re: another abstract
I like the original as well
If anything, a closer equal crop on all sides would also work.Looking at it again, I might be tempted to rotate it 180 deg so that the hightlights (bottom RH corner of image, also those in the reflections + open windows at the lower RH corner of the centre portion) would be in the top half of the frame, rather than the bottom half of the frame, thus they would draw the eye up thru' the pic to the top of the frame more easily. |

Re: another abstract
Hi Fi
I think maybe a tad lighter. And I like Robs pimp as well. Since you have this wonderful new toy (even if it is a Canon), of course you are spending your time learning your way around. But it might have be instructive and fun to spend an hour here (or anywhere for that matter), moving around, trying different angles and framing, settings, etc, and then seeing what happens and what works. Of course to do that you need a secretary recording all of your variables Anyone available for that?Anyway, it appears that you are having a great time with your cam. I envy you. And did you ever solve your problem with not saving RAW? skip |

Re: another abstract
well yes and no Skip, it did work if i saved then cancelled but it was at that point that PS stopped working altogether so im just gonna have to live with it the way it is! I have discovered how to lose the convertions so i can always do that.

Re: another abstract
Fi, looks like you're havin' a great time with your new shooter. I like abstracts and yours is a good one. Rob's versions works as well - that's one of the neat things about abstracts - there is no one way to do it and it is completely, totally, wholly subjective.
