Aqueduct over water

This is an old aqueduct in Devon carrying a canal over a river. I decided to give this an old feel and just see what happened. Hope you like it.

Re: Aqueduct over water

Hi Rob,

I think the picture's great. Strong composition, and plenty of interest for the eye, without being too cluttered.

I do find some of the highlights on the brickwork of the aquaduct a little bright, and they seem to lose some detail because of this. (this could be the rubbish monitor at work however!!) I wonder how it would looked with the brightness just toned down a little??

I also can't help but wonder how this shot would look in a high contrast monochrome???

All of that said I like it very much

Re: Aqueduct over water

Thanks for the comments Mouldy, I appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts.

I know it might surprise you but actually this IS a monochrome. it doesn't look like it because of the strength of colour but it is only using the one colour, mono of course does not necessarily mean black and white. I first use Channel Mixer to mono it and then used the colour balance to give it a strong tone. I was looking for something that would give it a feel of age as it is a very old bridge. I tried it every which way concerning the lighting and everytime I tried dumbing down the lightest areas of the brickwork, it made the image seem too flat so I decided to leave it but I understand entirely what you mean. I think it was actually the other way round though: rather than losing detail because of the lightness, I was actually fighting to GAIN detail from the original which was pretty flat. In the end I chose to use a filter (LucisArt) that helped to define some of the brickwork better than it was.

Thanks again for your thoughtful comments, very helpful indeed.

Cheers,
Rob

I like it, I like the composition of your shot. However I think it's a bit too red/orange, it kind of has a over done feel to it IMO.
Maybe if it was a simple B&W with a goodly amount of contrast may have worked better.

10/10 for having a go and trying something a little different

I haven't adjusted the balance between image and reflection in any way. All processing has been applied to the entire picture. Reflections are usually darker and stronger in colour due to the way water absorbs light. In other words only the darker parter of each colours wavelength is reflected back to the eye. So whilst it is different here, it is entirely natural.

Thanks for all the comments, i think I agree about the orange as well. I started off going for sepia but then went further with the balance, boosting the red and yellow to give this colour and liked it but maybe it is a bit too strong. I wanted the tone though, not black and white, because I wanted to accentuate the feeling of age, hence the idea of sepia etc.

Maybe I'll have another look at a black and white version to just see what it is like. I'll do it later, am at work at the moment.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Aqueduct over water

Ok, had a look at black and white, tried various types, high key, low key, padlock key....

This is the best I cam up with and I have to say I am not keen. I think for me I prefer the monochrome one but perhaps a less orange version. If anyone else wants to have a pimp and come up with a better black and white version, feel free :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Aqueduct over water

Rob, had a very quick play earlier. Don't know if that is any closer to what you were trying to achieve? It's still a bit bright in places so will have another fiddle tonight (am having great fun since I realised that unless I try things, I'm never going to learn!)
