Re: B&W horse

Hi Tara

Well done for getting your shot in the forum If you copy the top line of code under the image in your gallery and paste it into your post it will display in the thread and not as a link. I did this to your post - hope you don't mind.

The composition is good and you have eye contact. The white BG tends to draw the eye, and I'm sure there is more detail in the face that could be brought out with editing software, but I think you have been struggling to get an image here at all, let alone with tweaks!

Re: B&W horse

I really like the tones here, and the composition works as this is a simple image. Really nice conversion (unless it was film...)

Re: B&W horse

A little too much white BG and a touch too much body for me, so a more classic pose:

Dodged body to bring out a little more detail in the shadows, cropped

Re: B&W horse

I like the second one from Markulous. It has more detail which was lost in the first photo.

I'm not sure whether I like the b&w conversion on the horse. Have you got the colour photo?

Re: B&W horse

Thank you for the comments, they mean alot. Thanks dabhand and jmitchell. yes it was conversion not film. I kind of started liking this type of B&W horse pic with white in the backround from an amazing photographer named Roberto Dutesco. you should definately check out the pics @ www.dutescoart.com .... i thought mine was sort of the same idea??
Dutchie, i do have the color photo. I will put it on here although i have not done any editing on it.

Re: B&W horse

markulous, i dont mind your version, but i think it looks a bit fake that way and the shadows under the mane look strange
Dutchie, i lied. i no longer have it in color, but if you look at my other pics, you may be interested to see the same horse in color and a different pose!

Re: B&W horse

Well done tjay! Congratulations on your first picture on the forum, I like it.

I do think Mark's crop helps focus attention on the face, but Graham is right, don't worry too much about tweaking the images yet. You will probably get on to that later as you become more familiar with the software.

Re: B&W horse

Nice picture, Tara. I think your original of the horse is a great photo. Like the others, though, I feel uneasy with the composition. I think that some more space to the left of the horse's head would balance it better (probably rule of thirds for want of some other guide), and I would also consider flipping it horizontally, so that your eye is led from left to right towards the eye of the horse, arriving at the eye (although this works both ways).

Likewise, the second photo you linked to, the composition needs some work but I see from your gallery that you have some nice compositions. With your white background on the first one you can simply add some white to the left of the horse's head until the head is on the 1st third line.

HTH

Andy

Re: B&W horse

the thing with dutescort work, when photographing horses, like you he uses the white background as a canvas if you like, like a studio photographer would, for me this is without doubt to draw you eye to what is happening in his images, you will either recognise that each image is either a real action shot or a fragmented image, which of course creates great impact, and his tonal range is excellent. for me thats the difference. this is only my opinion however, if you agree i hope it helps, if not, ignore it lol
