Birds and Smoke

This is one of my first attempts at "photography." Tell me what you think. The mono conversion is perhaps a bit muddy but it still conveys a sense of industrial gloom I think.

Re: Birds and Smoke

I think the B/W treatment combined with the grain gives it a suitably industrial feel tho' I'd prefer a little more detail bottom left (I'm not keen on big chunks of black!) and it's a shame the sky wasn't a touch more dramatic. But neither are overwhelming points in an otherwise thought provoking shot!

Re: Birds and Smoke

Thanks a lot. The sky was fairly overcast that day, perhaps I could go back and give it another go when it is more favorable.

Re: Birds and Smoke

I think the main problem as we are seeing it is this is far too heavily compressed which has left it heavily pixelated due to compression artefacts. You have compressed an 800pixel picture down to 30kbs which is never going to produce great results and I am absolutely certain your original picture is far better.

On Pixalo, they alow up to 200Kbs and in my opinion this could do with being closer to that end, maybe aim for about 150kbs. This should keep the image looking stronger and more dramatic.

Any chance of seeing this again a bit larger file size (not bigger physically, just less compressed.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Birds and Smoke

Hey thanks, I'll have to work on that. Actually, I think the main problem is that I introduced 'film grain' with software. It would probably look better without it but I'm having trouble finding the original.

Re: Birds and Smoke

the birds add so much to the picture. the way they pepper the smoke and the sky is just great. I do agree with prior posts about the darkness of the building though.

Re: Birds and Smoke

Thanks so much for the feedback. The nasty foundry in the picture is just a mile or so from my house so I'll have to head back for another go. I'm quite sure the birds frequent that spot so maybe I'll get lucky again.
