Black & White attempt

I haven't had much experience with b & w but took this shot today with a horrible grey sky so it lent itself to this treatment.

I was after the 'aged' look of this supposedly haunted building so have added a slight tint.

How did I do and how can I improve it?

I'm not sure wether I should have cloned out the foliage entering the right side of the shot.

Bachs,

nice picture, couple of things though, to me it looks there is a slight lean to the right, shown by the corner of the wall in the centre of the frame,

also i would have put a far more dramatic sky behind it !

Other wise its a great picture !

nice tones Bachs, apparently thats important in a BW shot, so (i think) well done.

Agree about the sky though, needs more drama

Very nice Bachs, a little Adams family. Like the shapes.

Tidy shot, how did you convert to B&W ?

I prefere splitting into RGB and I am interested to know how others choose to produce B&W

I use ConvertToBW Pro as a PS plugin - it works better than any other method I've come across and allows you to give the effect of having used various coloured filters, different films and sepia toning. It costs US$100 but has been worth the expense and the exchange rate makes it better value.

Nice shot

Definitely a problem with vertical perspective, PhotoShop perspective tool should help –can’t say too much about this, since I’m still learning PhotoShop myself!

Agree that the sky needs something –I tend to use gradient tool to darken the sky (clearly seen in a number of my gallery shots). This emulates a graduated filter in trad photography.
My conversion method is usually via the channel mixer, although I am currently experimenting with PR Studio –B&W (www.powerretouche.com.) This PS plug in lets you emulated a lot of the things you would do in a trad dark room.

I've been continuing my mentoring by Martin Henson and here is the same shot with some new tricks learned.

I've changed the perspective but deliberately 'over-corrected' it to give an imposing feel.

Yes, I know I missed the sensor dust goobers in the sky...just pretend they're spirit orbs over a haunted building

I'm not going to re-invent the wheel, so here are the basics of Martins' techniques on his website:

I love the edit version - not so keen on the sky, but it really shouts out at you.

Bachs, hope you don't me trying out the tutorial I posted in "Digital Manipulation" on your shot :coat:

Shame the cloud shot I had placed a white cloud behind trees to left, but I think you get the idea. Note I've lost some detail due to compression
