Bored on the Train
Hi everyone,
Thought it was about time i threw one of my images into the lions cage to be critiqued ![]() ![]() I'm really pleased with this one, i was experimenting with slow sync flash to get a nice bright interior and a well exposed motion blur out of the window. This is almost untouched just a little nudge of saturation and a sharpen after resizing. What do you think?? |

Re: Bored on the Train
Really dig this shot Gypsy. Fun to see an effective application of that flash technique as I haven't played with it that much myself.
A lot to like about this shot. The upper reaches of the frame seem unnecessary, however, and a bit distracting. How about a corp thru or just below that black sign? - Paul |

Re: Bored on the Train
This tells a great story.
Young girl leaving home for the first time? Girls leaving her boyfriend to go away to university? The possibilities are endless....and that is one of the things that makes a good pic. Good job. skip |

Re: Bored on the Train
Like this - nice use of space with her staring out. Might want to burn back that reflected flash, tho' a very minor point. Possibly crop to push her even more into the corner (and maybe burn back the RHS just a touch)

Re: Bored on the Train
yep it has what every image should have,..... a storyline and interest....... i agree with a previous post i think perhaps a crop under the black sign would help but other than that its great!

Re: Bored on the Train
Love this shot Gypsy, works really well. I thought it would be worth seeing it cropped down as the amount above the girl's head was a bit empty and not giving much to the picture. She has a really dreamy look on her face as though she is either thinking of what or who she has left behind or is going to be seeing in a short while. That's why I chose this vignette frame to add to the dreamy feel of it. I also cloned out the flash reflection on the window edge.
See what you think. Cheers, Rob

Re: Bored on the Train
I agree about the crop there Rob, it definitely improves and focusses the image. The title is irrelevant but as it has been supplied I don't see her as bored at all. The slight smile gives me the impression of anticipation of a fun journey rather than a boring one.
The blur and motion effect work very well. |

Re: Bored on the Train
Thanks for all the comments.!!
I definately agree about the crop, think i'll revisit the original, sort out the flash glare and do a similar crop to Rob's above. |

Re: Bored on the Train
when I first saw it I thought abt the crop but really now I think it shouldn't be cropped,. it's a great image as it is
I like the height and amount of negative space at the top, I think it adds to the image,. the cropping seems to focus you more on the girl but I think it it removes some of the feel of the image, makes it too neat and tidy and less interesting Sil |

Re: Bored on the Train
I think Rob has the crop not far off, although I might have taken it down a little further to just above the tree line. It's a lovely shot though Gypsy, really catches a moment

Re: Bored on the Train
Having done the crop, I definitely think it needed it. The empty space above really didn't add anything meaningful to the short and this IS a picture of the girl and her musings as she gazes out of the train window so it is right that the focus rests on here. With the top left in, you have diagonal lines of the roof leading the eye above the girls head and out of the picture. There is nothing of interest up there unless you find notices about fire extinguishers particularly exciting!
Angela, I did look at cropping further down but when I looked at it, the small amount of blue I left really did provide a lovely contrast to the russets and browns of the streaks and houses outside so I left it at that height. Definitely was a consideration though. Most of all this is about the excellent capture of the motion blur outside and the lovely sharp internal image of the girl so well done Gypsy, you have done an excellent job ![]() Cheers, Rob |
