For the Boston Lovers
Hi Everyone,
Finally, this Saturday I was able to free a few hours to take pictures. I went down to the Charles River and took about 150 pictures with the goal to make them into panoramas. I started to set up the tripod a half hour before sunset and the last picture I took well after dark had fallen. The one below was taken with my Nikkor 35mm f/2.0D at f8.0, 15 second exposure time; it was pretty much dark at that time. This is going to be the "center piece" of a 200 degree panorama, which I have yet to stitch together. ![]() I must admit I am quite pleased with the result, even though I am sure there is rom for improvement (I am entirely new to night photography; this was, in fact, my first real attempt). What do you all think? Thanks in advance for your input. |

Re: For the Boston Lovers
the picture is great! i love everything about it...except...the only thing i would say about it is the buoy in the foreground is a little bit distracting.....but it could be easily fixed....and that was nothing you could help....but other than that it is a wonderful picture.
the detail in the building is great, and the reflection just adds to it. great job |

Re: For the Boston Lovers
Looks good from here - nicely comp'd and exposed
I suppose that arguably it might benefit from some interest in the sky but it does make the perfect plain backdrop. Oh, and I don't mind the buoy! ![]() |

Super shot you should be really pleased with. I'd also get rid of the buoy.

Re: For the Boston Lovers
Thanks a lot everyone for your very kind comments. I actually LOVE the buoy. It very nicely breaks the mirror-symmetry and makes the foreground more interesting. Of course, I want to be open for advice and so forth, so I did remove it, just to see whether I'd like it or not. Here is the "castrated" version:
![]() And I do like it better with the buoy. So if I should ever print it (no, I know I will), the buoy will be on the print. I think it is more interesting with it. Thanks again, Peter |

Re: For the Boston Lovers
I really like the depth and changing tonality of the blues.
This has the feel of your having taken night shots forever. The buoy - in as you said, it breaks up the water. Out, one gets a very lonely feeling of solitude. skip |

Re: For the Boston Lovers
Magnificent shot, Peter
![]() Can't make my mind up about the buoy ![]() I know you are adamant that you prefer the buoy included, but do bear in mind that if you want to sell the image, you have to bend to the preference of others, + seeing that the majority of comments in this thread are against the buoy, then I think that's an indicator to take note of ... if it's purely for your own personal enjoyment, then that's different Try printing both versions + show it to friends/family for their input |

Re: For the Boston Lovers
to me you definately have captured a feel of city life at night feel , whereas i can imagine people still going about their business.Very clear and bright image . think if i was selling the image (and as iam not into marketing photo sales this is only personal opinion)i would do both , as you then have catered for both , of course you wouldnt print whole heap of both you would just do one of each and depending on where your selling , that way you get the feel of what your buyers want . Am sure there is a market for both .Always can print more when you get orders.
I also like the way you have the two tallest buildings nearly equal distance from edge ,to me this makes it more balanced.Top shot

Re: For the Boston Lovers
I'm a 'with the buoy' man myself for one simple reason: until I read other comments on the picture I didn't even notice the buoy was there so it can no way be said to be 'intrusive'.
The whole picture is a cracking shot Peter, I like it a lot and as a 'Boston lover' it brings back very happy memories. Lovely work. Cheers, Rob |
