Brathay and the Langdales
This was taken a couple of weeks ago in the Lake District near Elterwater.
It's an early morning shot ( 5am ) of the river Brathay with the mist clearing to show the Langdale Pikes in the background. Camera settings are to the left of the frame. 17-40L ; ND Grad ; Tripod ; Cable release ; Mirror lock. All C&C welcome....good or bad. :thankyous ![]() |

at first glance i really like this..
the sky would have worked better for you if it was a bit more blue, not that that is your fault, but the light mist on the water and rolling mist on the land is great, cant help thinking the tree would have been nicer if it wasnt bent at the top, but thats not your fault either Dont like the thick black border though, really not liking that, a thin border would be nicer imo Thanks for sharing, very nice. |

You've captured a very serene atmosphere here.
At first glance, I thought this might be a good candidate for b&w, but looking again I really like the subtle colours. |

Excellent shot! If it's a crop I'd like to have seen the tree not quite so close to the top of the frame. If it's not a crop then a slightly lower camera angle might have achieved the same thing, but I'm being really picky, the shot captures the early morning atmosphere beautifully.

Deeelightful picture - I really like the subtle tones and the mist makes it almost, well, mystical

I like it, simply stunning. I have been promising myself for some time now That I’d get up real early in the hope of getting similar shots, but never have. I’d like to think that something like this would be achievable for me and that being the case I will be setting the alarm clock.

The reflection works really well, as does the mist (simply mystical!). Great shot!

Thanks for all the kind words.
EosD, I agree with you on the tree, it did bother me a bit but I'm stuck with it. As for the frame I tend to present most images for internet viewing with this frame as it's quick and easy with the camera settings included with only a few key board strokes via a PS script. I would never dream of printing it in this fashion but you're right it is too heavy. Bachs, I did consider B&W but, like you, I thought it needed some amount of colour. CT, this is not a crop. You think the tree is too close to the top of the frame ? Hmmm, thats got me wondering now. This is another shot from the same week. http://www.thephotographyforums.com/...ead.php?t=2786 Thanks for all the input. Last edited by Garnock : 24-07-2005 at 18:07. |

I have been looking at this for a while now as something has been stopping it from being "right" somehow. It's been bugging me as I couldn't put my finger on it till now.
The bank of the river is virtually cutting the picture in two but its not straight (not your fault) and the reflection also does not mirror the top of the picture, again not your fault entirely. This is making the picture unbalanced for me and leaving the bottom half of the picture a little barron. Its a shame you couldn't have raised your camera position to get the reflection of the lovely layers seen in the distance from the mountains. Your other option would be to turn the picture into a landscape shot and crop out the lower section of the photo thus balancing the whole frame. just my 2p's worth ![]() I hope your are not offended as this critique is very critical and aimed with your obvious skill level in mind. I think the last thing you want to here is just "great shot". |

100% correct, Steve. Great shot is, well, great in the share forum. I'm looking for critique. So if you feel there's something that can be improved, pre or post shooting, I want to know. It's also nice to know what you did right. ![]() My thanks, Cameron |
