Re: C&C time lets hear what you think
There is a lot of interest here. I see a flag peaking through the structure on the left and two silhouettes. I know its tough to compose in the "heat of the moment" and you grab what you can - but boy, it would be cool though to have a complete silhouette of that man on the right.
Let us know if it gets published. |

Re: C&C time lets hear what you think
The bloke on the right looks like the collapsing roof is growing out his head!
Looks very much like it could have done with 2nd curtain flash to capture both the glow of the fire and illuminate the scene in front. Its tough to work out what's going on aside from the telltale high vis outfit on one fireman. |

Re: C&C time lets hear what you think
I like the idea of using the fire to silhouette the people but I have to say it hasn't worked to its fullest extent here. I hope you understand this first comment....
I feel too safe! I (the viewer) am far enough away to feel safe and not feel the fire is endangering me at all. I want to feel the ferocity of that fire and experience some of the devastation caused by it. I can see a fireman (because of the reflective patches on his clothes but he's well back so he isn't in danger. I can't actually see him doing very much to end the fire, no hose and spray or anything like that. The guy on the right might be a fireman (but doesn't look like it) or could be anyone else. His head is lost in the BG and so he doesn't add anything to the picture. I know this sounds harsh but I am not trying to be nor do I want to discourage you at all. But as you entered this to be published by a newspaper, I am thinking the way an editor would think. He wants the fire to be a powerful demonstration of the destructive forces of nature, and if people are involved then that pulls at the emotions of the viewer much more. Get right in behind that fireman (with a long lens, not saying go and get in his way or put yourself in danger!) and use his recognisable silhouette to pull us into the fire (well, almost!) and let us almost become the fireman himself, trying to put an end to the devastation becing caused by a careless match! Cheers, Rob

Re: C&C time lets hear what you think
Well here is the update. The editor gave me a call today and advised me that he was going to publish my photos and gave me my first press pass and gave me some advice. (I think he must have talked to Rob first LOL!) So thanks folks for the advise and help. Let see what happens

Re: C&C time lets hear what you think
Well done on getting a press pass cpd, photo-journalism is a fascinating art form and improvement happens whenever you look at your last picture and think 'I could have....' :o)
Go for it and all the very best to you. Can't wait to see more from you. Cheers, Rob |

Re: C&C time lets hear what you think
wtg cpd. The start of an interesting career?
And once again, I feel that Robs comments are spot on, useful, and should be remembered by everyone who shoots photos for any reason. There has to be something in the image to involve or interest the viewer in some way. Well done, all. skip |
