I like the cropped version but i would personally move the frame up a little. Perhaps so that the silver bar is going into the corner of the frame?

That would allow you to show a little more of the engine and also the extra track included could enhance the setting.

Sort of like this perhaps.....?

I like the way it gives the shot exceptionally strong diagonals and convergance......... but perhaps it's almost too strong as it does try and keep the eye away from the two workers?

I prefer the first one. Crop out the green thing on the left though (or clone it out).

I prefer the first one as it sets the engine in context - I like the fact that the two railwaymen look small in comparsion to the engine. Additionally the red coachline leads the eye along the track and to the bridge thereby providing fore and background interest (he says). I'd also agree with the green metal thingy being a distraction.

Good photo

I see what you mean, Daz - comparing the three images, the large portrait one makes the workers seem more lost, my cropped version makes it feel a little too enclosed, as far as I can tell, but your suggestion opens it up a little and gives the frame some more context. Thanks!

When you say the 'green metal thing', do you mean the thing that's top left of the frame?

And they left their cuppa on the framework! When I was driving steam trains, I used to get a right rollocking for doing that cos it wasn't in keeping with the environment being created.

I like the pictures but actually think it would have been nice to see bit more of the chap oiling up, rather less of the steam from the draincocks. If you'd asked nicely they might have closed them for a bit...

The steam did die down a little so I got another shot in, but as you can see the poses weren't quite so flattering!

As for the cup, I left it in rather than cloning it out because they're only human!

For me, the original is still best as it shows the size of and hence represents the power of the engine.

Hmmm, I see what you mean!

Fair enough about the cup - I'm the boys of old would have had a brew, just maybe not in a polystyrene cup...
