Re: A Choice of Destination - Critique Please

Think I'd prefer the shot to be horizontal, at ground level - the subject looks great but the perspective lends too many confusing lines/directions for my eye

Like the concept Steve, making you question the ability of someone to use stairs if they use a wheelchair

I took one at ground level which is this:

I know what you mean about the lines of the overhead shot but I liked the combination of the chair, the stairs and the door. I want to stick one in the next colour print comp and i'm not sure which one to go for.

Generally, I don,t like converging verticals but I really like this one. My eyes flow from the door past the chair and up the stairs leaving me feeling curious.

You saw the same as me then John. It's the mystery of where the wheelchair owner has gone that did it for me.
I have had them both printed anyway so i'll see what works best mounted.

Re: A Choice of Destination - Critique Please

This is a very interesting shot Steve. When I look at it technically I can see bags wrong with it, mostly the lines as have been mentioned already. But stuff me getting all technical, I found I kept going back to look at it again as a picture and that is a good sign.

This is really telling a story. We have a wheelchair and some stairs that presumably the wheelchair bound person would struggle with. However, it is not a self-propelled chair and thus might mean this is someone who can not push themselves at all and is entirely dependant on others or could simply be someone who has broken their leg and is on crutches but can get around with difficulty.

When a shot makes me think far more about the people involved, even when they are not actually shown in the shot, rather than about the technical aspects then I think the shot has done its job.

Incidentally, the wheelchair on its own does nothing for me at all, it doesn't make me think about it like this main shot does.

Interesting, thanks for showing something different Steve.

Cheers,
Rob

Cheers Rob,

I think the technical aspect is up for discussion as i believe that shots can be technically correct but in reality 'wrong' is not a word that I like to use as each shot is always down to individual interpretation. I specifically took the shot from above to allow me to get both the door and the stairs in frame, converging lines in that situation and that subject are therefore impossible to miss.

I think your last comment about the shot making you think is what I was aiming for with the composition, thus the title, and I'm glad that you have commented as such because this will be a competition picture and if it makes the judge think then, as you say.......job done!

Re: A Choice of Destination - Critique Please

Sorry Steve, as you did when you posted, I had intended to put the word wrong inside quotes to show I didn't mean they were actually 'wrong' LOL. You are absolutely right on that point, I simply meant that people could find technical 'faults' if they are not looking at it for what it is, a picture. Because this is the critique thread, I know I am as guilty as anyone else of getting all technical about a shot and failing to see the bigger picture. This one forces you to look differently and that is a very good thing

Cheers,
Rob

Re: A Choice of Destination - Critique Please

Cheers Rob. I have actually mounted that shot now and it will be going into the print comp in a couple of weeks. It is a very strange shot, kind of quirky, but for me it kind of works.........i'll probably be accused of judge baiting

I also had the second one on this thread printed and though i have not mounted it (I did 6 last night as it is) I think that may work better. I'll see how I get on in Round 3 and stick the second one in Round 4
