Forgive me for not putting a picture in this one, I just wanted to make a plea on behalf of all the people who post their pictures in the Critique and Sharing threads.

The Gallery is a place where we can go and view all photos, even those in the threads here. Therefore the point of these two threads is to say 'Could we have a bit of feedback?' to get other views on our pics. Critique pictures are there for exactly that: to get constructive criticism and if appropriate plaudits for the work. The people posting have done so specifically because that is what they want so they will not be at all offended by your comments as long as they are offered in a fair and constructive manner.

I have had a quick look at the pictures there right now and compared the number of comments to the number of times the pictures have been viewed. Sadly, it shows that only about 1 person in 10 of those viewing is actually saying anything. Now, I know if a person returns to a thread it pushes up the number of viewings and I am not saying you have to make a comment every time if you have already done so but you get my point I hope.

So, can I ask that viewers PLEASE offer even a one-liner when viewing a picture, especially in the critique area though obviously more thoughtful comment is very welcome. Your comments are ALWAYS valid, whether you have been taking pictures for 50 years or 50 minutes or even not at all. Everyone sees pictures differently and experienced people often miss the obvious which gets picked up by those viewing with a pictorial eye rather than a technical eye.

So, new year's resolution for us all: Let's commit ourselves to looking to offer some comment, however small, whenever we look at the offerings laid out here. People have put a lot of time and effort into showing their pictures here so we are honouring that in giving our feedback.

I agree with you Rob, there's nothing worse than posting a picture up and not receiving any feedback. I know when I post, i'm not looking just for praise but also critique to move my photography forwards.

I've made a mental note to comment on each image in the critique forum whenever i log on.

It would be interesting also, to hear comments from the people who don't usually critique, so that perhaps we could answer questions and aleve doubt.

Hear Hear well said I post on here to get feedback I wont say good or bad because thats not the case feedback tells you if you are getting it right or can point you in the right direction so please give it to me good or bad said I would not say that

couldnt agree more, i think it goes back to the old thing of folks not thinking they know enough to comment on others and as Rob says that is nonsense.!!!!! so come on get the comments going folks..........

Look Veddie and Fiona, I am brave enough to go for something a little more muted and abstract but if you guys fail to see the picture that is not my fault

LOL, the ironic thing is this post without a picture in has got more comments than most of my recent pictures posted have got!.... hence the point of the posting so at least that proves it was worth it

Well, at least I have tried and IanHoughton has already kindly said he intends to put more feedback so well done to him and if a few more do the same, it can only make it better for us all IMHO.

Just as a pointer for people who don't like saying something negative in case it offends, I have an answer for you. I teach English and I bad my students from using the word 'nice' because it is so meaningless. So, if you see one of my pictures and don't like it, just say 'That's nice Rob!' and I'll know you hate it :o)

Why do I know that I am gonna get a LOT of comments about my pictures being NICE now! <g>
