hi folks

well been a round for a bit now and never posted anything n the critiques section here or any other forum so thought i'd put myself forward for a bit of a savaging

well i took this on a recent outing and posting it on a couple of forums and haven't received any comments at all really on it, so was wondering whats peoples take on it

Hi stupot This is my first time at critique so please dont take to much notice of anything i say at first time of looking at your shot I liked it but it did not seem to hold my atention for very long I had no idea why so i edited it a little and it seemed to me that it was a bit to light the exposure to the light house was not one way or the other I know I am not making sence so hopfully someone with more idea will try

Hi Stupot.

In my eyes you have a lovely exposure of the sky & captured the glow from the the light beam well. Only problem is you have very little in the shot other than the light house to keep the viewer involved with the photograph.

A nicely balanced photograph leads your eye around the picture....thus the 1/3 ratio of shots advice, plus use of "lead in lines" in the shot to give you eye something to follow, or something interesting in the foreground to give you a starting point to move on from.

So for your shot I think this is why people are drawn straight to the lighthouse, then feel they have nothing else to look at......I think this is what SteveC was saying. How to improve is a hard one. On a different night you may have some amazing clouds to add more texture & colour variation to the sky. Maybe a full moon in shot. As for foreground, not sure what there is you can use , especially when light is low. Maybe move around the lighthouse to add something that leads your eye into the shot etc.

Apologies if I've just taught your Granny to suck eggs , but I hope this opinion helps

Had a play in PS to see if I could add anything. Please excuse my edit as I'm pretty useless with Colour ...I've blown the highlights on light beam, vs yours ......but it might give some ideas.



First thing I did was to add a pretty dramatic "S Curve" to red channel only to bring out red in sky.
Then added omni light affect to lighthouse. (Filter -> Render -> Lighting effects -> Omni) .
Lastly duplicated layer, adjustedlevels to make lighthouse lighter & then masked back darker sky.

cheers guys, thanks for your input. I see what your saying about not much in the picture to hold peoples attention. I'm definately going to go there again some time so will try from a different perpective.
