Which do you prefer...?

Please help me pick the better photo of the two, they are the same thing, approached differently with lighting, and I'm fairly sure I like the first one the most, but would love to know your thoughts. Please critique as well... (view at higher resolution please)

Re: Which do you prefer...?

Yep, definitely the first one ALthough, that said, the detail of the flame against the kettle in the second one is lovely!

Re: Which do you prefer...?

I would say if there was a little more detail in the top half of the kettle in the second one it would be that one for me. ........does that make sense

So the handle/steam from the first one with the flame/dark edges from the second one

Yeah i just love the flames in the second one, but i think a chop like that makes it a digital image not a photo anymore... in my opinion of course...

Re: Which do you prefer...?

Oh please, let's not go down that road again! Digital images are photos.... in my opinion of course!

I definitely prefer the whole kettle being seen as it makes a big difference to the picture. Yes, i agree that the second one has nice flames licking the sides but if we're honest, not having seen the first picture, we wouldn't be saying 'the kettle has nice flames...' as it could just as easily be a pan, a cauldron, a jam pot, whatever. I must say i am using a dark screen here at work so it might be there is more detail showing when I look at this at home. if that's the case then ignore this comment please

I do think the first picture with flames licking the sides would make it even better but even as is, I prefer the first one as I like the ring of orangey glow that is caused by the kettle and the angle at which it was taken.

Excellent idea to show us both Tim to see the different views. Good work.

Rob

Re: Which do you prefer...?

I like the detail in the first one and the flames in the second!!! But even without the flames, the first one is great.

Seems to me that it would not be difficult to assemble, and then be a work of art

Re: Which do you prefer...?

I agree with Skip - combine the two in Photoshop or something and have the best of both. You might to need look up a tutorial on it.

Edit: Here's a (very!) rough idea of the two combined in photoshop - It's no different to combining two negatives in the darkroom. I used a layer mask (had the lighter layer on top) and just painted the parts I wanted to remove.

Re: Which do you prefer...?

Love that pimp, has brought the two together perfectly. I liked the original anyway but this one is excellent. A good original idea, two good shots brought together to make a real cracker

Cheers,
Rob
