Does this work?

I am still playing around and attempting to get accustomed to the Sigma 10mm lens and its unique perspective. This was shot while I was having a walk this afternoon.

I am not sure about the processing or the actual image, it is after all just a shed ...honest feedback welcomed on both

Are you turning into Dave!?

It is an interesting shed though Steve!

Seriously, I like it and the perspective is quite something. The processing works although those bright bits in the sky are catching my attention a little.

Re: Does this work?

Nice enough image Steve. Could be considered a bit of a des res by some

I'm wondering what else is on the RHS. The building is incomplete, and although your picture is of the shed, and I expect there was good reason for you to frame it as you have, If the building was either all in, or all out, I think it would strengthen the image either by putting it into context of belonging to the other building or by isolating it.

It does stand well as it is, just my thoughts.

Re: Does this work?

Steve,

I do like the photo...but I am especially struck by the conversion. I've tried several different approaches to black and white but have never arrived at anything as striking as many of the conversions that frequent this post. Steve, could you maybe share a little bit on how you processed this picture?

Many thanks,
Andrew

I think the shot and conversion are fantastic, although perhaps the highlights distract a little. Great conversion, and in asnwer to your question, yes it works, very well indeed!

They are completely lost in the original shot and I have done my best to recover the image. The problem was that I was shooting straight into the sun and the shot depended entirely on having a large amount of detail in the shed and its shadows. I should have bracketed the shots more but the shot was done as an exercise to learning how to frame things with the wide fov rather than a technically correct photograph. I accept it's not a valid excuse although for the purpose it was taken, I have learned a great deal from it.

This 'shed' is actually in someone's back garden. The house who's garden I shot this from is majority run down. The buildings in the back right of the shot are old outbuildings that connect directly on to the house a little out of frame. It was not possible to frame the shot without these in as to the left there was a massive tree that would have distracted even more if I had included it as an alternative to the buildings. I also wanted the corner of the 'shed' at the front of the frame to give me some lead in lines and interest, using the 10mm at 10mm the camera was no more than a foot away from the front of the shed, it really is crazy the FOV you get with this lens.

Thank you. The processing was to convert it from a RAW image in Lightroom and then in Photoshop I did some work on attempting to recover some of the highlights that were blown in the sky. After that I selectively sharpened the main shed area, dodged and burned key areas. The conversion to black and white was done through the black and white options in PS (using high contrast red filter IIRC) and then on a separate layer I darkened the whole picture so that the sky was completely black. Using the eraser tool I then removed the layer where it covered the shed and in certain cloud areas of the sky until I was happy with the isolation of the shed as the subject, and the contrast and tones of the overall photo.

Apart from the blown sky (a textbook, schoolboy error on my part) the rest of the shot seems to be well received despite the subject being something that wouldn't normally be attractive.

Hope that helps and thanks everyone for the helpful comments

Re: Does this work?

I think it is well framed and, as said, the treatment is excellent. All it needs now is for someone to come along and say they don't like the Converging Verticals. Well it wont be me. CV is part of the baggage of wide-angle. Sometimes it is severe and looks odd but sometimes, like in the shed, it conveys the essence of what one is trying to show. Me, I like CVs - gives a different perspective on things.

Re: Does this work?

Theres not much to dislike about this one.Yes the blown highlights are a shame but not a killer.I would actually have liked to have seen the clouds themselves a tad 'brighter' in general.I have no intention of 'teaching my Granny to suck eggs' but would it be possible to Clone some detail into those small areas of blown highlights?
.But a very appealing shot and a great sky,the way it seems to fan out above the shed roof
