A Dog, His Man, and a Fire Hydrant
Savannah, Georgia.
Saw this scene across the street, but fortunately my lens wasn't long enough for a close up of this gentleman, because the scene is wonderful. However, it lost a fair amount of detail in the compression. In fact, I think that this is one of my best images. Please comment, then later I shall discuss why I love this one. Thanks skip ![]() |

Re: A Dog, His Man, and a Fire Hydrant
Think I can see why you love this so much - it's a great combo with the stairway making a good frame.
I guess the slight negatives are the degree of spacing (they'd work better closer together), the crop close to bottom of staircase and the dog next to pic edge with leaning wall/tree/post (maybe widen the shot a touch). But, as I say, they're only minor points! Shouldn't have suffered compression seeing as it's only 80k |

Re: A Dog, His Man, and a Fire Hydrant
Yep this is one worth printing and hanging on the wall.
What's not to like - you have lines all over the place dividing up the image which because a lot of them are horizontal makes it quite flat but the staircase, the wall leading back from the left door into undergrowth, it all takes the eye up down, in. I snap to the Southern gent, then to his dog, then back to the fire hydrant, then up the steps, along the turned rail, back out into the scrub, then back to the front and down to the dog again. Probably isn't his house but you can see a story of man comes out door at top, walks down stair with dog, dog walks down street to the street sign, all held together by the diagonal of the stairs and then the diagonal of the dog lead. I guess I'd criticise the tones being a bit squashed together (as per my own upload today). I'd like to see more true black, true white and a wider range of greys. Re: A Dog, His Man, and a Fire Hydrant
I think it is just great to see a guy wearing a suit taking a dog for a walk! There is delightful 'old world' feel to this image that is like travelling back in time. Mono suits it perfectly - it would not have anything like the impact in colour.
I go along with Mark's comments re composition, but in these situations you cannot be fussy. Well spotted. |
