Re: dragonfly
you hit the pattern on the wings, but the focus on the head is a bit out of kelter. Good capture for what it is and when it came along. A smaller aperture would help.

Re: dragonfly
The tail and also the head are not sharp. I cannot see the exif info for this so I do not know what settings you used. A smaller aperture if that was possible would have helped to get more depth of field. Also if you could have tried to get more vertically above it. If you have the camera more or less parallel to the body you need much less dof. I know from experience that this is not always that easy and can also result in somewhat static looking shots.
The sunlit side of the post is too bright and has burnt out the details in the wing there. You could have tried bracketing the exposure and then combined two pictures to sort that out. You should be able to find lots of info on the www. This link may help dragonfly photography Final advice - keep trying.

Re: dragonfly
Yeah, as mentioned, if you get immediately above (easier said than done, I know!) you then don't need more DOF (which'll allow more BG into distracting focus)

Re: dragonfly
Yep, agree with the advice that's already been given, except that on my monitor there is no lost or burnt out detail, I can see it all.
I like the colour of the background, it sets off the colours of the dragonfly nicely Good try, keep at it
