Re: Dramatic waves

I like the brooding atmosphere here. I might have tried a version with slightly less sky and slightly more beach, so the wash from the waves touched the left hand edge and not just the bottom, but I'm not certain it would be an improvement - just an idea.

Re: Dramatic waves

If I'm honest, reading yor title and then opening the picture I was expecting big crashing waves, something really dramatic. I do agree though that the sky is pretty dramatic, more so than the waves here. I guess it's because living beside the sea, I do see some extremely dramatic waves - always when my camera isn't with me of course! - and this particular scene is dramatic because of the mono treatment rather than the content per se.

One other little thought for you to ponder, when taking this type of shot there is a little maxim that says let the eye follow the land so that you can enter the picture and 'walk' through it. This means that when you get a curved foreshore like this, you should not let the apex go off the side if the picture, instead keep a narrow strip of the beach to the right so that the viewer can sub-consciously follow a path around to the jetty etc.

I think there is almost a case for cropping the opposite way here, letting there be 2/3rds of the picture as sky which is very moody and less of the sea which hasn't got much going for it.

Hope that all makes sense and isn't too discouraging as it is certainly not meant to be.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Dramatic waves

Thanks for the comments. I agree with you Rob, and was actually waiting for someone to say it cos I noticed it myself.... The picture was rather dull until I tried to make it dramatic; nothing fake, but it didn't look quite so interesting to start off with...

Re: Dramatic waves

I really like the brooding atmosphere as well.... I've always been a fan of dreary/moody shots.

I thought the image would benefit from the perspective being a little more narrow, so I photoshopped out the far left edifice in order to bring the eye to focus on the right side of the picture. I also made the sky a tad more dramatic... just a personal interpretation, great photo!

Re: Dramatic waves

Nice pimp, like the way you've removed the jetty , although tbh I can't really notice a difference in the sky. Thanks for that

Re: Dramatic waves

Problem is, for me, the extreme white from the burned waves in a greyish image. Think you need to equalise the brightness a little:

Re: Dramatic waves

I purposefully brightened the waves cos I felt they didn't stand out, but maybe you're right....

Re: Dramatic waves

Excellent work with the Pimp Mark, especially in adding a bit of land to the right, it has made all the difference.

Cheers,
Rob

Mark's pimp provides the leading line that really completes the composition.
