Re: Durdle Door
Thanks Ray Durdle Door is the name of the limestone arch you see in the picture, it is part of the Jurassic coast line a world heritage site that runs from Exmouth to Swanage.

Re: Durdle Door
Chosen aperture is good.
I personally loathe long exposed water but that's a personal, not technical issue. I think because you've got this sloping beach with water rushing up it, the pic appears to be wonky, though I know the horizon on the RHS is level. I think possibly rotating this to a balance between horizon and that breaking wave might change or lessen this illusions effect. The tones in the sky are beautifully, subtly rendered. The strength of the light makes detail in the rocks hard to make out, so perhaps selecting them and fudging some detail in through curves/levels might be worth trying.

Re: Durdle Door
This is a lovely shot Stu, nice to see something a bit different of DD which of course locally I see loads of. Very nicely done indeed. I would no way consider rotating this as it is important to keep that horizon level. The sloping beach is part of the appeal of this shot and the warm mauve colouration is excellent.
This would make a lovely fine art print on canvas for sure. Cheers, Rob |

Re: Durdle Door
Cheers guys, as i said in the comment section of my gallery, i actually nearly didn't get this shot, this was taken when a very large wave hit the shore i had a split second to decide to grab or leave tripod and i left it!!! I must say it was quite scary to see the sea engulf your tripod with the camera inches away from a watery grave. But it paid off.

Re: Durdle Door
Lovely image Stu, very well done. I like the composition + colours very much. You got as much detail in the rocks as you could, given that they are backlit.
The bit of open sea on the RHS I feel is a bit lost as it looks rather dull + I wonder if a slight increase in exposure or a bit of dodging would help to brighten up this area just a little? My initial reaction to the horizon -vs- sloping beach effect was the same as MB's, but of course if you rotated it at all, we'd all be saying "you need to straighten the horizon" LOL. I agree that it gives a weird effect, but I'm getting used to it, the more I look at the image ![]() Love the way the light is glancing along the beach, and the sideways V shape on the left edge adds a great deal of impact to the image. Excellent work, not much could improve this image

Re: Durdle Door
Sorry to buck the trend here Stu but the shot would make for a nice holiday snap but not much beyond that. The framing feels too clumsy and the balance on the rocks itself, the beach and the sea are all competing, the sun behind is causing a high spot that is taking dominance. The sky is nicely exposed though but I disagree with Charlotte, there is no great deal of impact to it.
I see the sea as a huge expanse of dead space, it is adding nothing to the shot - if it was a rough sea maybe get it in but the combination of large vast space of a sea doing nothing but being blurred hasn't worked out here. Mike |
