Edinburgh Castle & Fountain - Take 2

For those who have been with Pixalo a few months, you might remember I did a very similar shot to this some time ago (it is still in my gallery) but I felt there was a lot I didn't like about it as it lacked enough contrast to bring the fountain to the fore with the rock behind and castle above.

When i was in Edinburgh in December, I decided to have another go at it. I was severely restricted because of the area all being fenced off due to the preparations for Hogmanay (which ended up cancelled due to the weather anyway!) but I have given it mono treatment again and I went for a tint because the castle is metallic and tinted in colour so I feel it works. I also feel it makes the sky and castle a bit more imposing and dramatic, especially as I added a vignette to draw the focus onto the two main areas, fountain and castle.

So for those who can remember it, is this better? For those who can't, what do you think of this one?

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Edinburgh Castle & Fountain - Take 2

I think this one is better, Rob. From memory, in the first one the fountain did blend into the picture where in this one it stands out from the rock and castle that make an impressive background.

The clouds are a little busy around the castle and the lightnes of the sky in the centre tends to draw the eye a bit, but I guess if it was darker it would merge with the outline of the castle. The structure above the head of the highest figure on the fountain, presumably the top of the fountain, could be removed as it is indistinct against the clouds.

Minor stuff overall.

Good work, Rob. I like this a lot better, and I was pretty critical of the first one.
I agree with Graham about the top of the statue, but I like the clouds. They add dynamism to the image.

This is not only better than the first but is a really good image, the composition is excellent and the elements of overlap etc that affected your previous one are very well dealt with here.

cheers

Re: Edinburgh Castle & Fountain - Take 2

I would agree that the fountain does look better against the rock in this one but it now seems to blend into the sky whereas it stood out much more in the first one. I also find the white line around the picture a bit distracting!

But the processing is amazing and it's a lovely shot.

Comp looks good - nicely proportioned. Not sure those clouds are doing you any real favours (getting a little mixed in with the building) and not wild on the border but both pretty minor niggles
