Edinburgh Sunset
Here's one from Edinburgh. I know it's noisy, and I know there are some halos, but I still think that the shot came out pretty well with a bit of editing.

Re: Edinburgh Sunset
I don't know anything abouth the town, Jack. But the noise gives me a feeling of a dirty, hazy sunrise in an industrial town. I like it for that reason. I like all the peak and roof lines on the LHS.

Re: Edinburgh Sunset
hmmmm im on the fence on this one and im trying hard not to be biased, but i dont really think u have shown the city as it is. I think also that a letterbox crop may suit it better as Arthurs seat is looking a little lost in the huge expanse of sky.

Re: Edinburgh Sunset
Thanks for the comments.
Fi I know this isn't what Edinburgh is like, and that's why I don't think I'm completely happy with it either, but I think that this sunset scene, after a day of the worst sky you've ever seen (just flat grey) is quite good, that's why I was so keen to capture it. But I agree with your comments, and might try a letterbox. Just need to get those damned film shots processed! (next week is when I'll do it) |

Re: Edinburgh Sunset
JMitchell - sorry but i don't like it as much as others. great view (it is great) can't be used as excuse for quality. it really looks like some industrial town. it's interesting shot but i would like to see same moment with better quality.

Re: Edinburgh Sunset
Nice enough pic but the crane growing out the steeple keeps dragging my eye back to it.

Re: Edinburgh Sunset

Re: Edinburgh Sunset
OK:
- Graham I know about the noise etc, but there isn't much more I can do without it looking like someone's smeared vaseline on it. - John, thanks for your comments, I purposefully cropped the bottom as there were just cars in a carpark and some modern-ish buildingtops there... |

Re: Edinburgh Sunset
Great sky (apart from the noise
) I'm confused by the lighting. It's a sunset shot, but the FG buildings (houses?) seem too brightly lit for a low light scene, and only some of them are lit in this way And they seem to have an HDR effect which serves to highlight the incongruity of the lighting on these houses as compared to the lighting on the rest of the scene, e.g. compared to the subdued light on the BG mountain + buildings on the RHS of the image. This HDR effect seems to have only been applied to some houses but not to others Against the seemingly brightly lit houses, you have the steeple which is markedly dark by comparison, even though it appears to be geometrically close to the surrounding brightly lit buildings (although the close proximity may be an illusion owing to a long focal length - I've never been to Edinburgh + am not familiar with the scene). What I'm trying to say here, is that the lighting seems very uneven across the scene, so that it looks like you photoshopped parts of the image but didn't quite finish.I'm ok with the composition, except for two small things: 1. Might be my imagination, but I think it could use a minute (as in 'mynewt' ) anti-clockwise rotation.2. I'm not keen on the part-buildings on the LH edge. I'd say crop them out, except that would place the tall steeple too near the edge which would unbalance the compo. Maybe if you'd included the complete buildings, but it's too late for that now. I like the scene in principle Jack, but for the uneven lighting, which doesn't seem to fit the sunset lighting scenario, and the uneven clarity of detail in the buildings across the scene. Oh, and lose the crane
