Entrance
forgot i had posted this with the intentinos of putting it into the critique, so will do it now before i forget again...................
i didint intend to use selective colouring on this but with the purely mono conversion it was screaming out that it needed that something else......... honesty as always appreciated

Re: Entrance
Starting with the good bits, I totally love the quality and detail of the B&W image. Although the lighting is a little flat, making the scene a bit two-dimensional, the statuary is brilliant as is the texture on the stones and the masonry work.
If I stay on the detail I really like this picture but when I pull back and look at it in totality I'm afraid it doesn't work for me. The doorway draws the attention, which is pulling you away from the lovely mono detail and when you get there (to the doorway) there is nothing really interesting to see. So you try to go back to the stonework but the eye keeps dragging you back to that door. There is also too much convergence in the verticals for me. I'm not a fan of unnaturally 'square' scenes but I think a bit of tweaking to make the verticals converge a bit less would improve the image. Overall it is an image I really want to like for the reasons I listed in my first paragraph. As an old-school B&W photographer who struggles to do good mono on a digital camera I must truly applaud the conversion. Unfortunately the whole package just doesn't quite work for me. P.S. The more I look at this image the more it grows on me. I just love all that detail in the architecture. Last edited by Larne; 05-05-2008 at 09:45. |

Re: Entrance
This looks like a mono conversion of an HDR master?
I like the effect and the single splash of colour though I personally would prefer a more orderly and rectilinear composition without the tree branch. |

Re: Entrance
i kept the tree in to give a feeling of depth, some like it some dont............ and no it isnt an HDR its a single straight shot that has the mono conversion layer put thru a filter called Lucis Art.
thanx for comments all, Fi |

Re: Entrance
Definitely agree, that rame is horrible LOL. Picture is great, just get rid of the CVs which would not take hours, more like seconds so stop being so lazy lass! Then you've got it, love the rest

Re: Entrance
I spent a while looking at and was coming to the conclusion that it was all wrong. Two centres of interest, the door and the cross above it, the branches and it looks slightly crooked.
The I realised that I actually like it a lot as it is Have to agree about the frame though |

Re: Entrance
I like it, I like it.No I dont! It's one of thos pic's. The B/W conversion is very good, I would prefer the interior to be more subude.
The frame I like, you have a colour from the pic, in the frame. The tree fits in with the Gothic look and the verticals look OK to me.cheers...kenny |

Re: Entrance
The detail in the building is just incredible and I could love this photo just for that. I think for me it's a tad to 'arty' but I find the effect quite interesting and one does feel the need to keep going back to take another look. I can imagine that it did need that colour you injected. I actually quite like the warmth it brings to an otherwise overpoweringly cold picture.
