Eventide at Derwent Water
Had to scramble through bushes, down a sheer face of rock and pray I didn't drop my one week old baby.... my Canon 40D that is
![]() I was rewarded with a scene that took my breath away. I captured a bit of it here but no way can any camera do justice to the immense scene that was spread in front of me. Still, I hope you like what i did capture. The colours here are as was, not been touched in processing. Cheers, Rob [/url]

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Think it all needs to be renamed 'Derwent Water'. Doncha just love software word filters!

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Those filters can be a pain sometimes
![]() Those colours are almost to vibrant to be natural Rob .Lovely capture, wish I had that sort of scenery close by. |

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
That is really nice Rob. At first, I thought that there was a bit too much water with little interest, but as I looked, the different reflections and the colour variation dispelled that thought.
The FG foliage gives a nice frame and you are drawn into the shot. I would consider toning down/cloning out the light speck on the RHS of the tree line just above the water, and perhaps just toning down the keyline in the border a touch. It has been a long time since i visited the lakes. I went camping halfway down Ullswater in November. I was the only tent there It is truly breathtaking - you would not believe you are in England.

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Title fixed
![]() Rob I like this shot but two things jump out at me. The first is the frame with it blue keyline and title is very overpowering and totally distracts from the shot. The second is there is a great deal of noise in the sky and I am not sure (even though you say that you haven't altered them) that the colours are looking natural. The water line on the right hand side is almost neon blue ![]() The scene itself is beautiful but the processing needs altering to make the shot appear more natural, even if you have not processed it at all.

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Rob, have you changed Monitors recently , as I've noticed most of your shots have too vibrant a colour to them ?? .... or are you going through a phase

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Rob, a lovely peaceful shot. I really need to go there sometime.
You have image editing turned on, so I hope you don't mind me posting my interpretation ... ![]() I've reduce the saturation a little (a touch more on blue than anywhere else), I know this was how you saw it but real or not it looks a little unnatural. I've also run it through a noise reduction tool and cropped a little off the top. cheers Dan |

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Have to say I like Rob's original better. Who's to say that he didn't capture that magic moment when the colors just explode before you. The light at sunset can do wondrous things and can often surprise you.
Does in look unnatural because we so seldom see it that way ourselves? Isn't that what we all strive for - to capture what others seldom see, but wish they could. - Paul |

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Don't get me wrong Steve, i HAVE processed this, I am not claiming this is straight from camera per se. But I haven't touched the colours at all. I totally agree that the blue is strong but that is just how it was.
One thing I must say though and probably answers Dave's question: I have noticed that the colours on the 40D are much stronger than on my previous 20D or the 30D. This is down to the new 14 bit AD convertor which can now recognise a total of over 16000 colours per pixel rather than the 4000 colours of the previous 12 bit AD convertor process. However, I did also keep the camera on Landscape picture style setting which might be popping the colour a touch too much so maybe I need to reduce the saturation on that setting. Does anyone else who has the 40D notice this increase in colour strength? Sarah (Whipspeed) I know you have this camera so I wonder if you have noticed much difference. I should mention that in the printed versions of these pics, they come out much nicer. Indeed, they almost have an HDR feel without doing HDR because there is a custom function that is called High Tone Priority. This keeps more detail in both the highlights and the shadows and allows for a full range of tones. It's apparently brilliant for things like white wedding dresses in sunlight but I havenm't tried it for that yet. I have done one wedding with it but the bride were a beautiful deep burgundy dress, sort of old Victorian style, which was stunning and avoided white problems in the pics ![]() Anyway, thanks for the comments so far. I also quite like the pimp but it doesn't look as strong as I saw it on the day. I think Paul is right, despite looking perhaps a bit unnatural on here, it really is close to what it was like in the real world. However, the one thing I did mean to do which I forgot was to run it through a noise reducer as the sky has definitely suffered there with that light. It has definitely made a difference and I agree with the crop of the top part of the sky, that has helped too. With regards the name, I had to change the file name from its original as every time I posted the UBB code, it truncated it with asterisks because of the 'offending' four letters in Derwen****er so didn't show the picture. Took me a while to figure out why it was doing that as I didn't realise there was a profanity filter in action. Oh well, got there in the end LOL. Cheers for all the comments, will be interested to know if anyone else has experienced these differences with a 40D. Cheers, Rob

Re: Eventide at Derwent Water
Of course it is all subjective but it is how we all learn by listening to how others see our work. Unfortunately I am in the over saturated camp......although as has been pointed out I wasn't there at the time, so don't really know how it should look but the trees especially lower frame from left to right have really lost most definition due to over saturation or some other processing......Having said that though the noise doesn't really bother me.
I do like Danpens edit, makes the scene much more realistic (imo) even those trees to some degree, However I think I would have cropped from the bottom.....Removing those trees that bother me so much. Hope Rob is okay with this, I think it emphasises that light more. ![]() Ken. |
