Re: experimenting with layers
Interesting result - almost 3D like tho' I think the OOF flower on the right might be burned back a bit

Re: experimenting with layers
I was like you, followed the link and looked around, I remember that I wasn't to impressed with the orton techique, only because I have never heard of it, not because I understood it completely, it could have been incomplete..anyhow. love to see someone brave enough to display expermentation, I like it because it has black, so really to understand what type of effect you were after here, you would have to spill out some more of your soul, like the biggist part of your work, did it go to the edges of your flower? or bringing the colors into a black background? overall I like the flower, but off the top, I would boldly say that a soft glow around the edges of it blended into the black might look pretty good. I hate being at work or I might throw up a pimp for you, enjoyed diving into this one.

What kind of effect were you looking for, Sue?
I would like to see the original as well to see what changes were made. Thanks skip |

Re: experimenting with layers
Thanks sue
I like the original. There is softness in it that is very appealing. The Orton effect is more evanescent (I couldn't find out how to spell erythreal) in effect, and from my point of view, unnecessary here. skip |

Re: experimenting with layers
Thru one together real quick, Three layers, normal background, copy blured real bad, mask out the blured center of flower , used select color to try and bring out the pink. added new layer, switched to color mode and selected the pink color and painted to highlight...I think I should have went all the way and had a stand alone flower,,,anyway made it look how I like it,,,when painting the pink on a the new layer, I ran it around the edge of the blured flower below,,the pink fringe. Hope this is a little something different, kinda old school.

you do realize iam going to be trying to do these steps , to see what i can do like the effect and thankyou for explainin how you did it ,my trouble is as am still very new to ps , i havent had much to do with any of it ,so when i start playing , i end up loosing track on what i have pressed etc Am goin to start writing down each step i do. But must admit it is a bit of fun just seeing the amount of effects it can achieve,

Re: experimenting with layers
Sorry, the wife was home and it was taco night, yeeha,,,
OK, this all happens in the layer pallette, Background,,,Hit the keys alt J for a copy,, background copy,,,go filter/blur/gaussian blur,,,adjust 16 for now,,make sure layer selected press mask button, the little square at bottom with round circle,,,see the white square appear..next to background copy layer? select paint tool, paint with black in center of flower, black will hide according to opacity setting on that layer, make sure the white square has an outline around it, that means it is selected. paint out close to edge with soft brush. Now add new layer in layer pallette, new layers are transparent. I selected the pink when I had the brush tool on by pressing the alt key and clicking on color in picture, go to the top and change the blend mode, it says normal, change to color. with low opacity, like 3 to 15, start to paint where you should think it will look good,, you can always start over. You should pick this up, you seem pretty sharp to me. One other thing, double click on the layer name and you can name it blur, color,,what ever you want to help you remember when you start Dreaming. Now keep the right layer selected so you only change that one layer. Or select the layer you want to work on in the layers palette by clicking on it. Hope this helps I was a hungry boy and my sweety said the right things. the tacos were greatttt. Any other crazy help, just ask me in here. ![]() |

Re: experimenting with layers
Hi Sue, had a go myself using what I have read as being the Orton effect and my image came out virtually identical to yours so haven't posted it. I think it looks good but from what I've read the 'Orton' effect will work on some images but not others so at the end of the day all of us have our own tastes and its good to experiment for these different effects.
