Re: Finding a Bargan

I am not overkeen on the lighting as it is a bit flat (try adding a fairly shallow S curve in PS) but I really like the composition here Vk. The curve of the building line from the left, the line of people through the middle and then the trees on the right creates good balance. Jacko's Woodturning gives the image good FG interest and the whole plethora of stall tops gives the feel we should get from a market place, full of hsutle and bustle.

Good work Vk, like it a lot

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Finding a Bargan

I also like the business of the image which as Rob said has captured the atmosphere of the market. Framing and composition is also good, but I think the crop is a bit tight, and I would prefer a little more space around the forground - unless there was something there that you wanted to exclude, of course.

Nice shot

Re: Finding a Bargan

Hi Will

These are my comments without looking at the others. If I am redundent, sorry.

First in terms of content, this is not a very interesting shot. The fg people and signs are a bit distracting, and I look at the shot and can't find anything to really focus upon. I think to myself, "ho hum, another market". There is nothing unique about it. It doesn't tell a story.

It would have been a much more interesting idea to go into the market and capture the people and activity, finding something or someone of real interest. That is from a practical point of view not at all easy, though.

Now technically, this is still a bit flat, Will. I think that you could improve that aspect using levels and alt/move the right and left arrows on each individual channel, r, g, and b until color starts to show up, then backing off just a bit. This adjusts the black and white points for each channel, I think. (Rob, correct me if I am wrong), and produces a nice "pop" to the image.

Finally, regarding the composition, I thought that cropping out the rh signs would help, but it didn't because I miss the large tree.

skip

well, I just read the comments. Noone agrees with me, yet.

As an aside, I was seemingly often underexposing even though the image looked good on the itsy bitsy camera monitor, so now I alway shoot with an overlying histogram. This histogram is not the most accurate things in the world on camera, but it helps tremendously.

Re: Finding a Bargan

sorry skip tend to see it different .,
" this is not a very interesting shot. The fg people and signs are a bit distracting, and I look at the shot and can't find anything to really focus upon. I think to myself, "ho hum, another market". There is nothing unique about it. It doesn't tell a story."

i think shot is interesting as to me i see it a market that is bustling with people ,going around doing there own thing, and the fg leads me into the atmosphere that there is woodturning as well as souvenirs and whole heap of stalls and even shops on the left.I definately see a story in image , as a busting market full of people enjoying there bargains and outing.

"Now technically, this is still a bit flat,"

unfortunately this came down to the monitor , on wills it looked really vibrant ,and wasnt to Rob comented on the flatness ,that we brought it up on my monitor ,and it is very dull and flat.Yet both monitors had been callibrated etc. So have gone back to checking on both monitors again.

but personally i like the atmosphere of the image , i like the the way buildings curve around on left and the trees have a avenue effect on left.i personally may of got rid of public signs on bottom of fg , however in a way i can see both relate to market ,so as everything is a personal opinion.

but sweetheart i think you have a great overall story attached with this image and pity we cant see your monitor version on here as i prefer that one

Re: Finding a Bargan

Isn't it a shame that the monitors influence us so much? Why can't they all be the same?

And Sue, you start out talking to me, then you end with "sweetheart". I have to assume that is not me!

Re: Finding a Bargan

Sue and Will, sweethearts , may I make a suggestion?

Instead of relying on what you are seeing on the monitor (as you said they both seem to be calibrated differently) try doing this:

Open the picture in Photoshop and have the 'Info' pallet open (often appears tabbed in with the Navigation pallet). Now, you can see the numbers down the left (ignore the CMYK percentages as you're using RGB here). Move your mouse over the picture to areas that look pure white to you and see what the numbers show as. If they show 255, 255, 255 then you will know that it genuinely is white in that area. Now move the cursor to an area you think is black and check the numbers again. They should show 0, 0, 0. If they are showing more than 2 or 3 then you have got a bit of detail hidden in there, if you find the numbers are going up to 10-20 then you will know that actually your monitor is set too dark because it is showing something as black when in fact it is less than black.

Move around and check in different areas and this will help you to see whether you have actually got a full dynamic range across the picture.

I hope you find that helpful.

Cheers,
Rob
