Re: First ever attempt at HDR
I too am no fan of HDR but as you say we should all give something a whirl - at least once!
You defo get plus marks for not arriving at the oversharpened look that is so often apparent but do think you fallen foul of the other trap: lightening where there wouldn't be light - the pulley has too much light on it for the apparent sun on the rocks. Having said that, darken the bright spot down and it wouldn't stand out. |

Re: First ever attempt at HDR
Agree with mark about the patch of light by the pulley.
The ground in the FG does look a little oversharpened to me, but just on the stonework. The rock at top LH corner looks an unnatural colour. Not too shabby for a first go tho' |

Re: First ever attempt at HDR
Certainly doesn't look like a first attempt to me. You climb that learning curve pretty fast there Fi.
well done - Paul |

Re: First ever attempt at HDR
Very good for a first attemp Fi, & something I've not tried. I don't think the pulley looks over sharpened, but maybe could be a little darker, but that might lose detail for you. I would tone down the yellow rocks slightly as they do take the eye away from the scene. Well done for having a go.

Re: First ever attempt at HDR
For me this is everything I don't like about HDR! I like HDR at times but so often it ends up severely overcooked with severe saturation looking anything other than natural. I know you were trying out Photomatix for the first time here so this isn't a fault of yours, it is just the way it came out and it will take a while for you to learn more about how to get the best out of that prog. I am no expert on it myself so can't offer much advice though I am sure others can.
Definitely not a picture I would want to look at for long BUT the original picture is well taken and has good composition to it, the FG block and tackle pulley giving good interest to draw you into the picture. So what you did is fine, what the PC has done is way too OTT for me. Keep playing Fi, no doubt you'll find a winner, you usually do! Cheers, Rob
