First photo posted here - please be gentle!

Took this in May 2005. Straight off the camera and unedited (except for the border and resizing from the 4mpx original of course):

wow! not much i can say other than that, thats really really good, very well done!

the only thing i would do is boost the colours a little and a tad of unsharp mask.

Very impressive, especially with so little post editing.

Agreed. Saturation is your friend. Even if you're going to change it to black & white.

Very nice, cant add much more to what everybody else has said, and is very unlike me, but hope you dont mind, if its a problem, let me know and will take it down ! This is a VERY quick edit, to show what can be achieved with just a little tweak ! and would obviously be better done on the original than a resized one !

Tiny levels adjust, increase saturation by 25-30 would have applied unsharp mask but because is resized it started to mess with the pic !

Nope don't mind at all. I just had a play with the pic in PSP9 myself and got pretty similar results to that at first - don't you think its a bit over-saturated?

I should add I'm completely colourblind, so colour balance is always going to be a problem for me to some extent.

It is probably a little over saturated yes. I dont like normally applying more than 20 saturation, but was just to show effect really more than dictate how your picture should look

You will find it far easier to work on a copy of the full 4mp original anyway, and then do a final resize for the web !

It is a great picture !

I find you have to apply a fair amount of saturation to get things back to being as vivid as they were in real life. Plus I don't see a problem with being creative as long as it adds to the image and doesn't look stupid.

Is it just me, or does everybody else here find it easier to bump the saturation up as high as it will go, then slowly move it back down til it looks 'right'?

When it comes to sliders I start out by chucking it to both ends of the spectrum then keep swinging between plus and minus until I gradually home in on the point that looks best. It helps to have a decent PC for that technique though.

I tend to bump it up until it looks unnatural, then drop it back yes !

Excellent first post. You've set the standard now though!

I like it just as it is - delicate subdued tones.

YES! A fellow colourblindee! I'm now officially happy.

I too am colourblind, but 2 months ago I was pondering my future in photography, and after much pondering sat back and said "**** it, I'm not going to let it be a problem", and went out and bought a new 350D, lenses etc etc, and decided to push my photography further and throw myself into it".

So don't let your colourblindness worry you....
..
.
.
Until you start taking shots as bad as mine hehe

To say that's straight out of the camera is impressive.
The first thing I do 99% of the time when my images hit Photoshop, is rotate and/or crop.

Nah it doesn't trouble me too much. I've been a computer programmer for nearly 20 years so I'm used to using R/G/B elements to figure out what colour everything is.

By the way - the pic above was taken on holiday during a lil trip to the Giza plateau at Cairo - I've got lots of shots of the pyramids/sphinx also - will post more later.

Really? Slightly off topic this... but...

The locals there will try to sell you ANYTHING and don't even stop short of pushing their rubbish into your hands then charging you for it.

After a few hours of 'La Shookrun' (pronounced 'La-ah shookrun' - "No thankyou" in Egyptian), I worked out that silence was the best policy.

Don't communicate with them at all and they get fed up in seconds. Also wear sunglasses at all times - avoids the risk of making accidental eye contact (which is as bad as saying "hello how are you? have you got any crap to sell to me today?")
