Fork in Monochrome

Would be interesting in everyones opinion of this....
Been doing some still life with bits and pieces from round the house. It was lit by a tealight, monochromed with channel mixer, a bit of dodging & burning and a bit of touching up here and there.

Does it work for people???

Thanks,

Matt

Re: Fork in Monochrome

Blimey Mouldy, you must have huge tealights in your house. You sure the curtains hadn't caught fire as well? <g>

Seriously, it is a good idea and I can see where you are going with the shadow and the diagonal positioning. I'm afraid for me the surface texture of the fork has got lost in the darkness and I can't tell whether this is a chrome fork or a black plastic one. I am pretty sure it is a stainless steel one but the fact remains it is not pin sharp and the detail is not strong enough to really grab my attnetion. It is possible that the original was pretty dark and you have lightened it up a long way as there is a lot of noise artefacts in the shadows, particular the penumbral areas.

I think you should do some more and focus on getting it razor sharp as well as enough light to show up the surface, be it brushed chrome or whatever.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Fork in Monochrome

Thank Rob,

Yes it was a stainless steel one, I thinks a lot has been lost in the black and white conversion.

I focused on the curves of the fork but had such a narrow depth of field that the prongs were oof !

The great thing is it wont take much to set up and try again,

thank for taking the time to comments Rob,

Matt

Re: Fork in Monochrome

It's a great idea and I like it ......I've done something similar. My only comment would be that there is almost too much shadow and it overwhelms the fork itself - my eye didn't quite know which way to go.

Re: Fork in Monochrome

Hi Matt

I have seen similar shots, and have wanted to do this kind of image. Lazy.

Anyway, I think that the light from the left is so strong that the details of the fork are lost. And in fact, there may not be many details in a stainless steel fork! Also the shadow is a bit overpowering.

I would like to see this sort of shot using an object with more detail and texture. Perhaps a sterling utensil (if anyone still has those), because the work on those is really good. Or maybe a paper towel shmushed up in an irregular form, or an old pot or pan or a teacup.

And watch the light. You don't want the subject completely is shadow.

Get the idea?

Hope this helps.
