France Landscape

Going to France has been my first real chance to shoot landscapes, and I wondered what you thought of this....
edit: and I know about the blowouts in the sky, nothing doing

Thanks,

Re: France Landscape

this is lovely ack, i dont think the blowouts detract at all, infact it lends contrast to an otherwise dark sky, my only prob with this is lack of detail in the hills bottom left and mid right, otherwise a lovely image

Re: France Landscape

No tripod = no long exposure , I couldn't get a narrow enough aperture to get it all in focus, but I know what you mean! Thanks

Re: France Landscape

Bit different to Clapham Common Jack!

I think this is a pleasing image that has captured the mood of the day well. The detail in the FG also leads into the shot, due to the darkness of the slopes on either side.

On first glance I thought the horizon was too close to the centre of the picture and was looking at a crop that would bring it more to the third, but I'm not 100% sure. If you scroll the picture so that the browser window crops it at just below the small white cloud in the patch of blue sky in between the two dark clouds you will see what I was thinking about.

Re: France Landscape

Lovely with the patchwork fields framed by the dark hills. Be tempted to lighten the bottom right slightly to make more of a diagonal leading into the shot.

Can see what Graham means re 50:50 - no big deal but think it looks better cropped.
Have to disagree with Fiona, blown highlights never do anything for me in landscapes

England doesn't have any landscapes?

I like this Jack and the 'blowouts' don't actually look blown to me Nice variation of colours, but I agree the compo looks a little odd, perhaps you could've moved round for a more balanced comp + not chopped the FG buildings off. Still, good work

Re: France Landscape

Thanks charlotte, I meant that it was the first time I happened to be in a place where landscapes are plonked right in front of me

And I was on top of a castle, a very high castle, moving was not the most inviting option

Re: France Landscape

Even small changes in viewpoint, like leaning to one side, tilting camera up or down a bit, can make a big difference to the composition of a landscape image e.g. by tilting the camera either up or down here you would've got either complete buildings in or, if that wasn't possible, tilt it up to cut a building out completely if it's being chopped in two in your viewfinder.
