I am really not sure about this one, I am happy with the overall exposure and composition. I like the seagulls standing on the ice in the distance, I think they add interest BUT the blurred geese in the foreground, hmmm not sure if it makes the shot more dynamic or whether it is just an annoying distraction. What do you think?

Annoying distraction. Well, you did ask!!
They would be a lot to clone out and there doesn't seem to be an obvious place to crop the picture either. But otherwise it's a lovely shot! |

Re: Geese by frozen lake
I tried to convince myself that the fg added to the image, but alas, I couldn't do it.
A crop at that black line at the top of the white area isn't bad. It crops out the blurred geese and all that white beach area, and makes a better, but not perfect, image, I think. The beach was distracting, too. skip |

Re: Geese by frozen lake
As I viewed this shot, I tried to determine what the subject or focal point of your effort was. My eyes could not find a place to settle. Cropping off the bottom really does not solve that issue. How about cropping off the top two thirds, leaving the blurred geese at the bottom?

Yes I did and thank you for the honest reply. It never occured to me to clone them out but that gives me an idea.

Re: Geese by frozen lake
OK, here is a quick fix, its not perfect, I'm sure I could get it better with a bit of time.

Much better! And I like the white goose in the middle...although he/she blends in with the snow a bit it still gives your eye something to focus on.

Re: Geese by frozen lake
If the original had had just a couple of razor sharp geese in it, I would have loved the image. As it is I like it (sorry to go against the grain on this one) because it has a sense of action rather than a static group of birds. Sharp birds about a third of the way in would have given us the focal point and the rest would have been superb.
So you really weren't far away from a cracking shot. Good idea to capture it so well done. Cheers, Rob |

I must confess, this was not planned, little did I know that the innocent looking old lady to my left was a photographic saboteur armed with a bag of bread. I had the camera on a tripod (hence the easy fix) with the self timer set to reduce camera shake. Whilst it was bleeping, she pulled the ace card and my foreground was on the move, bleep bleep snap! ![]() |
