Geometric

I guess that I am a sucker for geometric design, particularly at art museums. This was a recently constructed one in Denver, Colorado, by the famous architect Daniel Libeskind. It was very controversial with people saying that it was too much him and not enough the art.

I loved the museum, so took a few pictures a few weeks ago.

In my gallery there is a snapshot of the building in it's environment.

CnC very welcome, please.

Re: Geometric

I think this turned out good. You have shadows and I like the reflection in the window. I think when you take pictures of buildings you really need shadows. I may have gone alittle darker on it---that is just me tho---so the roof isn't so reflective.

Re: Geometric

I think you got the composition right here Skip In fact the composition is the strong point of this image.

I would have preferred a more even lighting, as I find the bright patch of light on the RHS quite distracting. I would've liked also to see a bit more texture, and I think this would give the image as a whole more depth + perspective as well. As it is, I can't figure out which part of the structure is closest to me or indeed where each part is (on the z axis) in relation to the other parts; I'm particularly having a problem assessing the placement the wall which is at the LH edge of the frame; as I look at it, it keeps swimming to the front then floating to the back!

It's an interesting abstract which I think would benefit from more texture, depth + perspective, which I think you could achieve by trying to get a greater tonal range out of the parts that are in shade. Of course, that would've been easier for you to do in-camera if you didn't have the high contrast caused by the patch of bright light on the RHS. Basically you have 2 dominant tones here, but not much variation of tone in between; my guess is that you have a histogram which has 2 or 3 spikes, i.e. the tones are very unevely distributed.

I like the compo, which is quite arresting. This is because you have a mixture of round shapes + straight lines together in the same image. In composition + design, curved lines + straight lines are a conflicting mixture by nature - not necessarily in a bad way, but they do need careful placing within the frame, and I think you did an excellent job of it here

All in all, I like the image Skip, I just think it is let down by the high contrast lighting which resulted in burnt highlights on the RHS, thus inhibiting a full tonal range.

Re: Geometric

I think Charlotte has summed this up pretty well - I was going to say that I liked it too, but it would have been better with more even lighting - the patch of sunlight has done you no favours. On an overcast day it would have been much better.

Having said that - I also like the composition and the straight lines v circle.
