Simply beautiful shot. I really feel the rolling of the hills when I look at this picture. I can't find fault anywhere.

Re: Hadrians Wall

A classic composition Ken. Everything on a third, wall leading into the shot. Only change I could think is to have the horizon on the top third - show more wall and less sky. Either way, excellent.

Re: Hadrians Wall

It is a lovely scene with the wall and sunlit hills - agree with Stephen that it'd be good to see more of that (even to the extent of maybe preferring a landscape aspect)

Thanks Guy's....It just so happens

Although i'm not as keen on this one as I feel the wall is a little on the bright side! (harsh Sun an all)

Well I think that is one itch I can't scratch.....I'll have a look though. Just felt right at the time to shoot in portrait.
Thanks again for the comments.

Yep....prefer that Ken, you can follow the wall right through the shot

Re: Hadrians Wall

Gets my vote too! Can see what you mean about the wall (tho' it's not really a prob) - I'd be tempted to burn that back and maybe dodge the wall behind to emphasise the lead-in

Re: Hadrians Wall

Beautiful, classic composition. Marks suggestion of using a bit of dodging & burning, would just give it that extra lift.
I personally like both versions equally, the first because I love shots of the sky and the second the textures in the wall.

Re: Hadrians Wall

I agree with Whip that both shots are great. Different moods evoked but both as strong as each other.

The sky shape in #2, i.e. where the blue is, adds greatly to the comp by 'pointing at' the tip of the distant hill (similar but not as strong in #1). Landscapes with Luck! Can't beat 'um!

Cheers

Re: Hadrians Wall

I still like the first one the best. The second has the wall in the center and I like the wall off set some.

As for taking off some of the sky...I was playing with it on my computer and moved it maybe an inch. That was ok, but I think the sky helps make the hills roll. At least for me.

Re: Hadrians Wall

I'm with Mary, 1st one for me. I wouldn't crop down that sky as it has a brooding meanness to it which adds a certain something to the atmosphere. I love it and would have it on the wall for sure.

Second one is well taken but is 'just' the shot everyone would take of Hadrian's Wall. I am not in the slightest saying that as a put down, it's a very well done image. It just doesn't grab me in the way the other one does. I think it feels a bit busy whereas the first holds a sense of calm.

Both good work though so well done.
Cheers,
Rob

both are outstanding, i prefer the first image compositionally, and the second for tonality and contrast. Nice shooting

Thanks very much.....I agree myself, much prefer the first, the second does very little for me too don't really know why apart from the harshness of the wall maybe, just prefer the comp and sky of the first.
Thanks once again for all the comments much appreciated.

Hi Ken, Both shots are great and the comments given I Tend to Agree with. Howevre scrolling back thro' the image no1 I found that 60 mm trim off the Sky give added strength to the wall. A favourite place of mine.

Re: Hadrians Wall

I much prefer the first one. It give a sense of brooding calmness and serenity, whereas the second gives me very little feeling. For me, it is just a snapshot.

When Stephano suggested keeping the sky at the top third only, I thought that might be preferable, but for me, it didn't work.
