Re: HDR Sand Machine

I know, by the time I figured it was time to get a handle on what was happening, I needed sun glasses. But it was taken in noon day sun, I went to another spectrum that seems to appear in HDR the way I process. Need more imput please,,

Hi Boofers......how many images did you use on this one and which programme did you use to do the HDR?

Re: HDR Sand Machine

1 RAW image opened in DxO to DNG, opened in RAW converter, saved as TIFF, opened in PHOTOMATRIX and tone mapped, then back to photo shop and used color selection to tone down the helios in the sky, made selection of sky, all the colors in the wall kept changeing so it was required to move the whites in color selection to bring out the blue, I have tried to stay away from the helio effect and maintain the tonal range such as you see on the hand rail around the right hand tank. It's like making donuts, cook, dip in sugar, add sprinkles, then pick sprinkles you like and have lunch.... The DxO to DNG works quite well and works well in photomatrix. I originaly took 4 lower exposed images because it was so bright at mid day. I plan to to use all four once I get feed back on this, I am hopeing that photomatrix will keep the adjustments from DxO and not just read the exif data. must breath,,,, the art in front is mostly just like a white balance board and the detail in the tank is what I am most interested in, but the two togather need to work, not clash. .,,,Breath,,,,

Re: HDR Sand Machine

I have to say it doesn't have the feel of an HDR picture and I definitely agree it is a bit OTT. I have to say I think HDR works far better with a combination of 3 or more photos taken at different exposures rather than one photo which is adjusted and then recombined, indeed CS2 usually spits it out if you try doing it with the same picture lightened and darkened rather than three different pictures.

This one isn't really to my taste as I don't like wearing sunglasses indoors <g> but if you do one with a few shots rather than one, let's see the results

Cheers,
Rob

Re: HDR Sand Machine

If you think about the flat surface paintings on the wall, painted on color depth, then the real color depth of the tanks and conveyor, there is some tonal difference, OK the sky was overdone and deserves to be bandished from the public., It was all burnt up and greyish white, so I am getting the answers I wanted to hear before I move on. But nobody said anything about the mix of colors, so I am thinking that they seem to work if only they had more HDR effect? except the sky of course,,,

Re: HDR Sand Machine

Hi Boof

Let's forget the HDR for the present. I am going to pull a "Charlotte" here. What was your purpose in taking the shot? Was it the graffiti? Was it the sand machine? There are really two subjects here, fighting each other, and so don't make a pleasing image from my view.

Your processing made it appear like a poster or cartoon, which is fine if that was your intent. Rob is right....HDR in cs2 doesn't work with one image unless you fudge the exif info. But the intent of HDR is to combine dynamic ranges from 0 to 255 when part of the image is much too bright (like the sky) and part is much too dark (like the landscape).

But if you wanted to create a sort of kitchy image, you suceeded. I just don't like the contrast between the graffiti and the sand dredger.

Re: HDR Sand Machine

I really like the wall, all the old and new machinery, old bridges, buildings...here are the four generated images in photomatrix, I used the tone compressor option and added alittle beef in photoshop, I learned a lot this little round, now I will take a break and enjoy something else for awhile. Thanks for giving me something to think about, I do live on the abstract side of photography and want to learn all aspics of color creation. This shot was taken on the shadow side of the wall, the sun is high to the right side. Cheers and have fun.

Hi Boofers, must say i much prefer this one to the other. However,I would personally have gone portrait format to get the top of the building in.
I would like to see the originals of some of these HDR'd images, because I am seeing a lot of this HDR that just does not look 'real'.I have never tried it but i suspect it suits only certain shots that 'need' it ,and then with subtlety and a light touch. That,of course,is only my opinion

Boofers, I also much prefer your last-posted shot. IMO it's still too saturated to look real, but certainly a much more pleasing image than the one in your first post

Re: HDR Sand Machine

Definitely prefer the latter picture and just for once I'm going to disagree with Water on this one. I think the portrait image would change the impact of the shot. The fact that we can't see the top of the building works here because it prevents us looking at it as the main subject. In this pic, the graffiti is the image and the BG building is the balance but I don't want that BG to become too important in the picture. The traingle made by the conveyor belt and the line of the wall works very well indeed and if you made this portrait you would almost certainly lose some of that.

I'd leave this more or less as it is now.
Cheers,
Rob
