Re: High Key Butterfly Portrait
love the angle and position. Was there anyway of different bg as to me the only thing i personally find is far to much white glare. But fantastic and well focused great shot

Re: High Key Butterfly Portrait
Well, after all, this is a critique section so here goes:
First, I am not fond of the hi key here. There is just too much highlight and the bf is all pink and blue and green. The range of tones is a bit narrow. There is not enough black, not enough other midtone to create an interesting image. And the tip of her wing is cut off. It would seem to me that this angle doesn't do justice to the beauty of the bf. And the bf is centered and pretty much straight up and down. So the image immediately loses impact. This might be a better shot in either full color, even a bit oversaturated, or in mono. On the other hand, if you don't try things that you think are really ridiculous, you will never create anything unique and exciting, so keep going!! skip |

Re: High Key Butterfly Portrait
i like the idea of this image, but im not sure it worked... first of all imo hi key is best served in mono...... i think you should convert this to mono and try again .. . i do agree that the loss of the tip is an issue......... but i think more experimentation and you could end up with a cracker of an image.

Re: High Key Butterfly Portrait
Perhaps the mono is more interesting, but again, there is not a wide range of tone.

Re: High Key Butterfly Portrait
Is this a butterfly or an alien? or have I just been watching to much sci fi.... Sorry, I'm not a big fan of Hi Key when it comes to nature shots. There are few things more beautiful or natural than a butterfly and this technique just doesn't do it justice - IMHO.

Re: High Key Butterfly Portrait
It's an attempt at something different which i applaud. I have to agree with others that it hasn't really worked here though. High Key is about having strong tones at the extremes and not a lot in mid-tone so that doesn't worry me except that there is loads of white luminance and very little black. I think a slightly stronger angle would give us a defined shape with the wing sweeping out to the right a bit more. As it is, I just see two strange looking eyes and a black line going straight up the middle of the picture.
But don't stop trying, play with other subjects and see how well they come off. I think butterflies have a very delicate nature and any picture that takes that away is going to need something very strong in its place to balance it. Cheers, Rob
