Nice shot fiona, the gull is good and sharp and the dof reduces what could otherwise be a distracting background into a pleasing setting.

I agree with Whip, everything you had under your control has been done right Fi. The composition is good, the focusing is excellent and the lighting is as good as you could get it. The problem in the BG is the strong reflected light from the river and the darker incidental light of the wall meaning the lighting has to be a happy medium. Unfortunately, as Murphy's Law would have it, the light BG is behind the lightest part of the bird and the dark BG behind the tail which is also dark.
So what has been achieved in taking the photo is excellent, well done :o) Cheers, Rob
