how can this be improved

Hi,
Took this shot a couple of days ago, and was quite pleased but it did'nt have enough "pop", so had a go at livening it up a bit....have I overdone it?

Really, I got the original photo wrong in the camera by overexposing the sky, so I've lost a lot of detail there . A better sky (more dramatic clouds) would have improved it I think.

You photoshoppers are welcome to add a suitable sky to show me what it should look like
Thanks,
Rich

I would say so - its rather warm.
Starting from the original, increase the contrast, increase the saturation a little, select sky and adjust levels to try and bring back some of the detail, adjust overall brightness, resize and then sharpen (this probably being the most important bit as the posted images are a bit soft).
You should get a better result using the source image. I'll leave changing the sky to others as I've not really had a go at that yet.

Mark

I agree- a bit too warm. I don't think the hedgerow is doing much for the shot so I'd be inclined to remove it to the level of the grass, and replace the sky, keeping the whole thing looking simpler. Worth doing though as I think the shot is probably worth it.

Couldn't resist having a little play I thought mono would really bring out the texture in the root of the tree. I'm no expert in photoshop - just fiddled about until it sort of looked ok I'm sure someone will come along and do it properly!

Thanks all...useful comments.
The images are a bit soft but the originals (even in jpg) are much sharper, I seem to have lost some of the detail when resizing to 800 wide for posting in the gallery here. Maybe I have to "oversharpen" them a little to make them appear sharper at the size I have to save to in the gallery and post here???

CT,
I might get round to improving the sky, but I don't think I'll remove the trees in the background cos I wanted to keep it pretty much as it was recorded. Maybe when I get used to photoediting I'll get more adventurous.

Minimeeze,
Very good job on the B+W version. I did my own B+W yesterday cos I thought it'd suit it, but yours is better thanks.

Once again, thanks.
Rich

Thanks for the sky DJW
I see what you mean about it looking like a painting, has a surreal look about it now. Not quite what I had in mind, but a nice effect nonetheless.
I'll have to get Photoshop and have a go myself sometime.
Thanks,
Rich

well, it certainly has 'pop' now Looks like it's gonna jump right out of the monitor - almost a 3D effect.
