How would you have set up for this shot?

A slight mist this morning and I thought I 'd try a few shots. I used the 50mm F1.8 and my settings were -

Manual
1/500
F1.8
800 iso
Auto WB

No post processing.

Nice fog shot! I can't see that you've done much wrong there. I assume it was hand held, in which case you could probably have stoppped down to f5.6 and still have been safe using 1/125th and got more DOF, but it's pretty academic as any slight blur often enhances this type of shot and adds to the misty effect as it does here.

It still might benefit from a sharpen to make the foreground street lamp sharper, and I'd correct those converging verticals. Excellent shot though, and one you can be proud of.

What CT said about f5.6. f1.8 produces some soft images and doesn't get really sharp until about 2.8 or above.

Unless that was your intention?

Just out of interest, where's the 'sweet spot' on the 50mm? Is it at the magic f/8 or is it elsewhere? I'm on a quest for sharpness at the mo so ought to know it really.

Many thanks - that's exactly the sort of critique I was hoping for. My original thoughts were - dark, mist - open the aperture for as much light as possible so as to have a fast shutter for a hand held shot. I wasn't much worried about dof as I thought it wouldn't be noticeable in the "gloom". Thanks again.

I would recomend using a shutter speed close to 1/125 for a shot like this as with the 50mm you are very unlikely to get any camera shake unless you are very unsteady. That would have then maximised the depth of field available between the lampost and the building. If you are unsure about which F stops are best then switch your camera into TV mode and select your required shutter speed, the camera will do the rest. Also as digital is free, don't be afraid to take several shots with different settings.

Also that the camera has a DOF preview button which although not ideal can help in certain situations. It will take a little getting used to but can be useful at times.

Like the pic - the one thing that stood out, for me, was that the top of the clocktower is cut off. Extended the sky upwards a bit to see what it looked like, and corrected the converging verticals while I was at it:

Me too. But as im from Dewsbury, you are from Huddersfield and he is from Brighouse, there must be 20 of these types of buildings in each of our respective towns :lol:

..............Batley. It's now used as the central library. My offices are on the bottom of the square.
