Looked for a different approach to shooting ice carvings at a local festival this week.
Here, I used a remotely fired speedlight [SB800] mounted with a tungsten gel, held behind the carving to light it thru from the back, to give it that yellow/orange glow.

You certainly got the different approach you were looking for Paul :o)

I must confess I am not totally sure about this one for a couple of reasons. First thing is I can not tell that this is an ice carving, only just make it even with you telling me let alone without it. I had to look for quite a while before I saw any shapes or recognisable forms in it and eventually I started seeing a couple of eyes and was then able to work out the face at an angle to me. I have a feeling this is one of those where some will see it instantly and others will take ages!

Having said that, perhaps that is a strength rather than a weakness, you are frced to look and look to see what is going on in there.

I like your idea of remotely firing the flash in behind the carving so that it stands out from the base area below. Maybe a view from just a little further back so that we can get a bit more of a handle on the overall form of the sculpture would just finish this off?

Interesting shot and the more I have looked at it the more I have enjoyed it.

I saw the face immediately. Ice carvings are difficult. It was a good idea, I think this is something worth trying.
